How to deal with a crazy boss

The world is filled with crazy people, and if you are (un)lucky enough, one such person can even end up being your boss. Working with them is just like living in a hell, but this does not mean that you cannot deal with the situation.

Try to understand the condition of your superiors

First of all, you need to understand that your superiors or boss are nuts just because you don’t like them or even loathe the thought of them. It is a fact that almost everyone of us have polarized feelings about most of the things because we all have varying opinions. You cannot claim your boss to be crazy because he is just trying too hard to stick to the company policies or any other similar reason. What we are talking about here is a person filled with rage, has inconsistent reactions to the most common situations and is very likely to have mood swings. They are the people who have no pity for others but when it comes to sharing their feelings, they will expect you to have sympathy with them. For them, the interests of the company come only after their own interests. They always believe in having an enemy at all time, that is why their subordinates are always at their target.

Maintain a communication chain

Communications is perhaps the best way of resolving conflicts, but this is rarely a case when you are dealing with irrationality. Experts will always recommend you to place as many people as possible between you and your crazy boss and try to establish communication with your boss only through this passage. Generally everyone in the office is aware if the boss is crazy. If your boss sends you a scornful or critical message, then it won’t sound that much horrible if it gets filtered through at least one of your fellow employees that you have placed between you and your boss. Still if it does sound horrible, then at least you will have someone who can sympathize with you. When you are dealing with such an unstoppable force, then it is very important that you have a communication chain and support of your colleagues.

Maintain a crazy log

It may sound as crazy as your boss actually is, but this technique has proven to be very effective in many cases. You just have to note down all the details of the instances including the date and time when your boss has done something insane. This record is going to be of enormous help if you ever have to go to human resources for assistance. On a more personal level, this method is very effective in letting off all the frustration. It is quite obvious that you cannot act like your crazy boss, so whenever any of his crazy actions annoys you, simply write it down in your record and let go of it for the rest of the work day. Take this record home and you will really enjoy sharing all those incidents with your family and friends. It also acts as a motivation for leaving the job when it gets long enough.

Put every request in writing

You generally get a contract whenever you do business with unknown people. Follow the same policy with your boss because in the event of an issue, this contract will ensure that you are at least somewhat protected. We are not saying that you make your boss sign any sort of anti crazy contact, surely this is not logical, but you can certainly have a written record of requests. For instance, if your boss asks you to submit the project report by Friday, then ask him to give the details via email or a memo. If any such situation arises in which you boss asks for the report before than the due date, then you can keep your point that there is certainly some “misunderstanding”, and as proof you can show the email. This is not going to give you the guarantee of stopping your boss from being hostile, but this way you can certainly prevent yourself from the punishment for the mistake. You can also take the matter to the human resources if your boss continues to blame you for mistakes which you have not done, and these written documents can be of great help.

Plan for the future

If nothing else works, then the best solution is to look for a job somewhere else. Of course, finding a new job is not going to be your normal cup of tea, plus, you don’t have the luxury to quit your job on a whim, but still there is no harm in trying or planning for the future. Take out some time from your schedule to look for new jobs. Don’t get disheartened if you are unable to make any noticeable progress, just keep trying and you will eventually end up with a better job.
