How to deal with allergies

All kinds of allergies are difficult to deal with and control. Seasonal allergies can give a daunting time for the person as it can disrupt his/her work schedules. There are many things that you can do to keep allergies under control. Here are some ways to treat allergies and prevent them before it’s too late.

Allergy medications

Chronic allergies can be difficult to control. In such cases, allergy medications need to be resorted to. Antihistamines are normally prescribed by doctors to keep the allergies under control for people who are prone to chronic allergies. Most symptoms of allergies can be controlled through the intake of antihistamines and the patient can be kept symptom free, especially when it is a seasonal allergy. Other optional medications that are used for controlling allergies like hydrocortisones, epinephrine, cortisones, dexamethasone, anti-leukotrienes, etc., can be taken after adequate prescription from the doctor. Quite a few over the counter medications too are available for common allergies. Check if they are suitable for your allergies before taking them.

Stay away from allergens

Reducing your exposure to the allergens that cause the allergy is the best way to stay away from allergies. However, this may not be possible all the time, especially if you have pollen allergies which are difficult to control. But, when you are allergic to things that can be controlled, the best way to stay allergy free is to keep away from the allergen, especially if you have severe allergic reactions to these things. Allergens that can be controlled are food allergies, contact allergies, etc. For allergies that are caused due to molds, dust etc., HEPA filtration system can be installed at your house. This will reduce your chances of getting exposed to allergens while at home. Dust allergies can be combated by using masks that prevent inhalation of dust.

Use of humidifiers

Respiratory allergies are the most common forms of allergies that affect a major chunk of the population. Most respiratory allergies worsen when the atmosphere is dry. This can irritate the throat, sinus, nasal passages and worsen the discomfort, especially in the night, thereby disrupting your sleep. Using a humidifier or vaporizer can help in such cases. Humidifiers keep the air moist and help in reducing the dryness of the respiratory canal. It keeps the air passage open. Nasal blocks too can be relieved through the use of humidifiers. Using a humidifier throughout the night will help you sleep peacefully as well. Before sleep, you can do a steam inhalation to remove nasal blocks. This will enhance the effect of the humidifier and help in keeping the nasal passages open.

Healing power of natural remedies

Several natural treatment methods can be used for treating allergies. Natural treatment methods are very safe and without side effects and can be administered even in children. They also increase your immune system response, thereby preventing allergies from cropping up. Goldenseal capsules can be used for sinus and upper respiratory tract infections. A teaspoon of turmeric taken along with a glass of warm milk helps in treating cough, cold, inflammations, and skin allergies. Echinacea tincture and grape seed extract help in increasing immunity and fighting allergies. A tablespoon of nettle tea steeped in a cup of boiling water overnight will help in treating sinus problems. 2-3 cloves of garlic taken every day can help treat cough, cold, skin disorders, and many other inflammatory diseases. Natural treatment methods can also be used as a preventive medicine.

Detoxification and immunotherapy

Removing toxins from the body helps the body stay strong and prevent recurrent allergies from setting in. The simplest method of detoxification is to drink plenty of water. Water flushes out toxins and germs from the body. Along with that, you can take plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin C, etc. Other foods that help in detoxification of the body are green tea, sesame seeds, garlic, lemon, pumpkin seeds, etc., which also increase your resistance power due to the antioxidants that help in preventing free radical damage to the body.

Immunotherapy is a method of exposing the person to higher and higher doses of allergens that he/she is sensitive to. The exposure will slowly help in removing the body’s reaction to the specific allergen and reduce the allergic reaction considerably and in some cases remove the allergy completely. Immunotherapy is known to be very effective in treating asthma, rhinitis, etc. It also strengthens the immune system with exposure to more and more allergens.
