Attitude – What it is? How to Improve?

In our day-to-day conversations, we regularly hear people say, “He or she has lots of attitude.” or, “I don’t like his or her attitude.” We are constantly told by our elders and seniors that having a positive attitude is the only way to achieve favorable results in every task. In today’s ever competitive world, a lot of onus is given on attitude in every organization. So, what exactly is this attitude?

According to psychologist and Professor Philip George Zimbardo, attitude can be defined as a positive or negative evaluation of people, objects, events, activities, ideas, or just about anything in your environment. Simplifying Zimbardo’s definition we can say that attitude is our tendency to respond positively or negatively in a given situation.

For Instance, when Mark visits office, he gets to know that his boss has loaded him with tasks for the day.

Mark has two ways to look into it A) He thinks its way to much for him if he gets nervous, anxious, tense and depressed thinking about the work, we can say that Mark has shown negative attitude towards the task given. However, if he optimistically gets about the task, thinking that his boss trust him and has loaded with responsibility, he would find a way to finish it before deadline, it can be said that he has shown positive attitude towards it.

If a glass is filled with half water we have two ways two look into it A) The glass is half empty (negative attitude) B) The glass is half full (Positive attitude).

The Mayo Clinic states that positive attitude lowers your stress levels. Therefore, in the first case, the chances of Mark finishing the task are very low since he has reacted negatively while in the second scenario, he is more likely to finish the task.

Another example – Steffi is married to a man living in a country she has never been before. That country has a completely different lifestyle than Steffi’s birth nation. If Steffi starts thinking at the onset that she won’t be able to adapt to the lifestyle of her husband’s country, she will have problems over there or she will take very long to adjust. But if she positively starts adapting to her husband’s country thinking it won’t be a big deal, she will find it that much easier to adjust.

George Bernard Shaw, the well-known Irish playwright and the co-founder of London School of Economics had given a very interesting quote on the term attitude. He had said, “Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world.”

What he meant is that your attitude is your window through which you see the world. If your window is clean, neat and tidy, the world will appear to you as a pleasant place to be. On the contrary, if your window is filthy and untidy, your opinion on the world will be the same. In simpler terms, attitude is a filter by which we evaluate things in favorable (positive) or unfavorable (negative) ways.
