-after getting the tattoo, you normally have a bandage placed on the area to prevent it from getting infected. This bandage should be removed a few hours later and then washed with an antibacterial soap. This will reduce infection and should be only done using luke warm water as hot water will burn the tattoo and your skin. The tattooed area must be washed very delicately in order to remove all traces of ointment, ink residue and blood.

-apply washing, dry the area using light strokes and then apply an ointment like Aquaphor, Bacitracin or A+D ointment, but do not apply petroleum jelly or Vaseline. Apply a very small amount of any of these ointments and rub it till it is a very thin shiny film that you can barely see. This should be a uniform layer on the entire tattoo so that it has a sheen over it, applying too much of the ointment can saturate the tattoo that will lead to too many scabs or cause the scabs to come off prematurely.

-continue to apply the ointments for a maximum of three to five days irrespective of the size of the tattoo. Was the tattoo to remove old ointment applications once before you get out of bed in the mornings and just before to go to bed at night. Washing the tattoo several times can speed up the healing process, if you tattoo is in an area that is hard to reach, ask your friend to help you out just make sure that their hands are clean or better yet, ask them to wear sterile gloves. Use ice to reduce swelling while keeping the tattoo area elevated or get a prescription for ibuprofen.

-after the fifth day, a thin hard layer of skin will peel off with some of the tattoo ink on it and is the last stage of the healing process.you can then use a non scented moisturizing lotion.
