Visitors may only feel the relative  \t\t\t\tmildness but we who live here, Kitty &amp; I, we know the changes of  \t\t\t\tthis `Aina (land\/country) in our bones and in our noses. Crystal  \t\t\t\tsharp trade winds bear the scent of Alaska, of thousands of open  \t\t\t\tocean miles, and vast empires of sky.<\/p>\n<p>They  \t\t\t\tpause to pick up smells from yellow ginger, hidden mosses, and  \t\t\t\ttropical soil, as they push themselves over the green Ko`olau  \t\t\t\tmountains that backdrop our toy city like a misty Asian scroll  \t\t\t\tpainting. The character of the clouds tells me it&#8217;s winter. Is  \t\t\t\tit their shape, activity &amp; colour? Or is it their sense of humor  \t\t\t\tas they tumble mumble and disassemble like Circe de Soliel  \t\t\t\tacrobats above us?<\/p>\n<p>The  \t\t\t\tHawaiians of old found ready messages and wisdom in the clouds.  \t\t\t\tKnowing the Kanaka (Hawaiian person) love of fun and word-play,  \t\t\t\tperhaps certain funny-clouds rained punchlines that made the  \t\t\t\tKahuna chuckle all day. . . their cirrus &amp; cumulus descendants  \t\t\t\tare not telling; Not even me, their cousin Cloudia. . .&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A new  \t\t\t\tdisplay at Iolani Palace features some of King Kalakaua&#8217;s  \t\t\t\tpersonal treasures, including a gold cigarette case dusted with  \t\t\t\t99 diamonds, three emeralds, and four rubies, given him by his  \t\t\t\tsister in law Po`omaikelani in 1881 as a birthday present.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tOther royal baubles include a &#8220;unicorn&#8221; cane (actually the tusk  \t\t\t\tof a narwhal) and a122 year old Swiss watch with a curious,  \t\t\t\tearly digital display.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And  \t\t\t\tspeaking of family heirlooms, some of Madelyn Dunham&#8217;s dresses  \t\t\t\thave been removed to the Mu`u Mu`u Heaven Shop in Kailua in  \t\t\t\torder for the fabric to be reworked into dresses for  \t\t\t\tgreat-granddaughters Malia and Sasha Obama to wear.&nbsp; This sweet  \t\t\t\tcustom is an Obama family tradition.&nbsp; The President-elect wears  \t\t\t\taloha shirts made from his late mother&#8217;s clothing as well . . .&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Winter surf is drawing crowds of up to 2,000 to watch  \t\t\t\tworld-class Triple Crown of Surfing events, like the kick-off&nbsp;  \t\t\t\t&#8216;Reef&nbsp;Hawaiian Pro&#8217; men&#8217;s surfing contest recently at Ali`i  \t\t\t\tBeach Park in Hale`iwa Town.&nbsp; Waves the size of office buildings  \t\t\t\trush to the beach with a roar that cannot be described, you need  \t\t\t\tto experience it.&nbsp; Tiny humans perched on splinters of high-tech  \t\t\t\tfiberglass glide down the ever-changing faces of these giants,  \t\t\t\tsometimes they are tossed into the air and then immediately  \t\t\t\tsubmerged under tons of crushing ocean, even dashed on the  \t\t\t\tsubmerged reefs that give the ocean travelling swells the &#8220;ali-UP!&#8221;  \t\t\t\tboost which&nbsp;causes the awesome monster waves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tripatlas.com\/new\/images\/articles\/waikikiwintersurfer.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Reef Hawaiian Pro\" title=\"Reef Hawaiian Pro\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"300\" height=\"382\" align=\"right\" \/>Only  \t\t\t\tprofessionals may enter the water on those &#8220;big days.&#8221;&nbsp; The rest  \t\t\t\tof us are safer on the shore, contemplating nature&#8217;s furious  \t\t\t\tceremony.&nbsp; DO observe posted warning signs, check in with  \t\t\t\tlife-guards, and as the Hawaiians always say:&nbsp; &#8220;Never turn your  \t\t\t\tback on the ocean.&#8221;&nbsp; More better you do your OWN water sports  \t\t\t\there in gentle Waikiki!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While  \t\t\t\twe&#8217;re on the beach, did you notice that orange helicopter flying  \t\t\t\tlow up the coast a minute ago?&nbsp; Every day our US Coastguard  \t\t\t\tconducts these slow, watchful flights (around 80 knots, and as  \t\t\t\tlow as 200 feet) around our isle of O`ahu.&nbsp; Flying about 350  \t\t\t\tsearch and rescue missions is just&nbsp;part of&nbsp;what they are doing.  \t\t\t\tEnviornmental protection, such as enforcing the Marine Mammal  \t\t\t\tProtection act, and&nbsp;port security, make the Coast guard a  \t\t\t\t&#8220;multi-mission&#8221; asset to our island community.&nbsp; They use cameras  \t\t\t\tand deterrence to protect our wintering whales and they provide  \t\t\t\tan ever-reassuring presence to boaters and kayakers far from  \t\t\t\tshore.&nbsp; Each HH-65 Dolphin carries two pilots, a rescue swimmer,  \t\t\t\tand flight mechanic.&nbsp; Thanks folks!&nbsp;<\/p><div class=\"3a64bb57635b757d04b12bcf0c14b9a3\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; For 30 years &#8220;Save our  \t\t\t\tShearwater&#8221; boxes have been available at island fire stations&nbsp;to  \t\t\t\treceive&nbsp;(mostly) fledgling birds disoriented by lights,  \t\t\t\tbuildings, and human activity.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They are a&nbsp;marine species&nbsp;born  \t\t\t\tin nests high in upland forests of ohi`a and uluhe, who find  \t\t\t\ttheir way out to sea from&nbsp;mid-September to mid-December.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tThirty-two thousand such birds have been rescued and released  \t\t\t\tsince 1979, according to S.O.S.&nbsp; Students and public officials  \t\t\t\tshared a youthful &#8220;yeah!&#8221; as each guest departed; and students  \t\t\t\tfrom Ke Kula (School) Ni`ihau O Kekaha chanted in Hawaiian.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\t&#8220;We&#8217;re&nbsp;here to celebrate this really awesome bird.&nbsp; This bird is  \t\t\t\ta part of you as you are a part of this island.&#8221; said Nick  \t\t\t\tHolmes, the project coordinator. . .<\/p>\n<p>Another endangered species, our local family-operated  \t\t\t\tfood&nbsp;producers, loses another member as Marufuku Brand Miso (soy  \t\t\t\tbean) Paste Factory closes it&#8217;s 67 year-old doors in Honolulu&#8217;s  \t\t\t\tworkaday Kalihi neighborhod at the end of this year.&nbsp; Mr Harry  \t\t\t\tMorita cooked and fermented his first barrel in 1941 when there  \t\t\t\twere 40 other miso producers in the islands, and sugar  \t\t\t\tplantations still spread over&nbsp;our plains.&nbsp; Mr. Morita immigrated  \t\t\t\tfrom Japan at 11 years of age to work on&nbsp;a&nbsp;Maui Plantation.&nbsp; He  \t\t\t\tdidn&#8217;t care for plantation life, ran away to work in a butcher  \t\t\t\tshop and dreamt of owning his own store.&nbsp; Employment at a miso  \t\t\t\tfactory in Liliha set him on his life&#8217;s path.&nbsp; He chose the name  \t\t\t\tMarufuku because it means &#8220;never-ending good fortune.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After  \t\t\t\this death 17 years ago the younger generation continued Harry&#8217;s  \t\t\t\texemplary service ethic,&nbsp;even going so far as to deliver fresh  \t\t\t\tmiso to the homes of those with questions, and demonstrating  \t\t\t\tmethods of storing and cooking with their product.&nbsp; The&nbsp;Moritas  \t\t\t\twill miss the clan business, but times change. &#8220;The family gets  \t\t\t\ttogether to work and share stories . . . it&#8217;s kind of sad  \t\t\t\tbecause we won&#8217;t be able to do that with the grand kids.&#8221; said  \t\t\t\tJohn Morita. . .&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BIG  \t\t\t\tCONGRATULATIONS to Kumu Hula, musical performer, writer and  \t\t\t\tcultural icon Robert Cazimero on being named a USA (United  \t\t\t\tStates Artists) Fellow.&nbsp; Take her to Paris Station on Keeaumoku  \t\t\t\tat King Street!&nbsp; Women from all over the islands, and the world,  \t\t\t\tmake their way to this locally owned small business to trade and  \t\t\t\tbuy designer handbags.&nbsp; Cindy Young saw a market and boy has she  \t\t\t\tcornered it!&nbsp; Gently used, and carefully selected Gucci, Dior,  \t\t\t\tFendi, Vuiton, and Hermes bags (all at a major discount)&nbsp;fill  \t\t\t\tthe&nbsp;colorful little shop along with&nbsp;some brand new items selling  \t\t\t\tat &#8220;retail.&#8221;&nbsp; Some refer to Paris Station as the happiest place  \t\t\t\ton earth.&nbsp; That&#8217;s cool; I&nbsp;prefer to think of Waikiki as Paris in  \t\t\t\tFlip-flops, so designer bags are not exactly my &#8220;thing&#8221; but if  \t\t\t\tthey are YOURS this place will put a smile on <em> your<\/em> face. \t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parisstation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> www.parisstation.com<\/a> .&nbsp; .&nbsp; .&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A minor  \t\t\t\tindustry of Obama Tours is stirring, including &#8220;Barack Obama&#8217;s  \t\t\t\tLocal Neighborhood&#8221; tour led by the civic-minded Clean Air Team.  \t\t\t\tCall 808-948-3299 for information.&nbsp; .&nbsp; .&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps taking their cue from the stand-up surfing craze,  \t\t\t\tskateboarders&nbsp;around Honolulu are now seen using &#8220;Pavement  \t\t\t\tPaddles&#8221; to propel themselves along the sidewalk!&nbsp; Remember  \t\t\t\tattaching skates to a wooden fruit-crate for your first  \t\t\t\thome-made skateboard?&nbsp; Me neither<\/p>\n<p>;-).&nbsp;  \t\t\t\t.&nbsp; .&nbsp; Walking&nbsp;these Waikiki&nbsp;streets, I like to have a dollar  \t\t\t\tbill or two ready to share with a smile.&nbsp; I spotted&nbsp;him&nbsp;just  \t\t\t\tahead: a young fellow with a well worn pack who looked as if he  \t\t\t\tneeded a meal.&nbsp; &#8220;Aloha,&#8221; I smiled at him, &#8220;How&#8217;s it going?&#8221;&nbsp; He  \t\t\t\tlooked happy but disoriented.&nbsp; &#8220;Had anything to eat?&#8221; I&nbsp;asked,  \t\t\t\toffering him a dollar.&nbsp; &#8220;Oh that&#8217;s cool.&#8221; he replied with his  \t\t\t\town beatific smile. &#8220;I have this feather.&#8221; he&nbsp;said, happily  \t\t\t\tshowing me a white quill.&nbsp; Nonplussed I continued on my  \t\t\t\tway&nbsp;&nbsp;thinking of&nbsp;Disney&#8217;s baby elephant Dumbo who was able to  \t\t\t\tfly above the circus crowds clutching his magic feather.&nbsp; Safe  \t\t\t\tlandings, young man. . . .&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This  \t\t\t\tweekend, the Honolulu Christmas tree will be erected&nbsp;downtown.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tAlready!? Yes.
