Read past <a href=\"https:\/\/tripatlas.com\/new\/walkinginwaikiki_articles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walking in Waikiki Articles on tripatlas.com\/new<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 1px;width: 650px;background-color: #cccccc\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tripatlas.com\/new\/Barack%20Obama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tripatlas.com\/new\/images\/articles\/waikikiobama.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Barry (Barack) Obama\" title=\"Barry (Barack) Obama\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"300\" height=\"391\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>I love little Young  \t\t\t\tStreet in Waikiki&#8217;s neighboring Makiki district.&nbsp; A one-time  \t\t\t\t&#8216;carriage lane&#8217; it is the quiet back street between urgent King  \t\t\t\tStreet and stately, rushed Beretania.&nbsp; Here, away from the  \t\t\t\tmain-stream are small, long-time businesses, the back side of  \t\t\t\toffice buildings, garages, small apartment buildings, and the  \t\t\t\toccasional tiny, perfect Hawaii bungalow with mynah birds and  \t\t\t\tdoves singing in a front yard plumeria tree.&nbsp; On Young street  \t\t\t\tyou can hear your thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Young <strong>Barry  \t\t\t\t(Barack)<\/strong> <strong>Obama<\/strong>, whose childhood apartment  \t\t\t\tis adjacent to Young street, must have walked the lane many  \t\t\t\ttimes to collect his thoughts while growing up.&nbsp; And there he  \t\t\t\twas again, during his most recent visit with the ailing Tutu  \t\t\t\t(grandmother) he so often speaks of.&nbsp; No Michelle, no Sasha&nbsp;&amp;  \t\t\t\tMalia giggling this time; just a guy coming home, perhaps for  \t\t\t\tthe last time, to the rooms he grew up in, and the accomplished  \t\t\t\twoman from Kansas who, he says, made him what he is today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One afternoon, the  \t\t\t\tpresidential candidate strolled down Young Street with the  \t\t\t\tSecret Service at a respectable distance.&nbsp; The young guy with  \t\t\t\tthe basketball is now a family man with much more important  \t\t\t\tcontests to win, but the passing of an age, of those we love,  \t\t\t\tputs things into perspective doesn&#8217;t it?&nbsp; He must have been  \t\t\t\tenjoying the perspective of Young Street till the cameras found  \t\t\t\thim.&nbsp; Pensively he rejoined the caravan.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a shame that his  \t\t\t\tprivacy was broached, but I am grateful for the few moments&#8217;  \t\t\t\ttape of him walking alone.&nbsp; A local guy walking down the back  \t\t\t\tstreet, with miles yet to go. .&nbsp; .&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;And speaking of local  \t\t\t\tpride!&nbsp; My childhood Phillies have won the World Series with the  \t\t\t\thelp of local hero, Maui Boy, the &#8220;Flyin&#8217; Hawaiian&#8221; <strong>Shane  \t\t\t\tVictorino<\/strong>!&nbsp; In his ballpark locker, Shane has a news article  \t\t\t\theadlined: &#8220;Hawaii Wins Little League World Series 08.&#8221;&nbsp; Our  \t\t\t\tkeiki (kids) inspire us, and now the Big League Bruddah is  \t\t\t\treturning the favor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tripatlas.com\/new\/Jason%20Elam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tripatlas.com\/new\/images\/articles\/waikikiobamaelam.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Jason Elam\" title=\"Jason Elam\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>These tiny specks of  \t\t\t\tisland also produced the Beijing Olympics&#8217; &#8220;greatest athlete,&#8221;  \t\t\t\tdecathlon gold medallist, <strong>Bryan Clay<\/strong>, soccer golden girl \t\t\t\t<strong>Natasha Kai<\/strong> (I know I&#8217;m forgetting others!) plus NFL  \t\t\t\tplayers like kicker <strong>Jason Elam<\/strong>, and Washington  \t\t\t\tquarterback <strong>Colt Brennan<\/strong> of last season&#8217;s WAC champion,  \t\t\t\tyep, UH . . . (and let&#8217;s not forget <strong>Jack Johnson<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>But enough boasting!&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tThe Hilton&#8217;s <strong>Luau<\/strong> on the Lagoon looks to be getting very  \t\t\t\tpopular.&nbsp; You can now save yourself a bus ride far out of  \t\t\t\tWaikiki (though <strong>Paradise<\/strong> <strong>Cove<\/strong> <em>is<\/em> a great  \t\t\t\tplace) while still enjoying torches, hula, games, and too much  \t\t\t\tgood food in a lovely setting . . . &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>Jimmy<\/strong> <strong>Buffet<\/strong> is opening a huge-mungous restaurant at the Waikiki Beachcomber  \t\t\t\tHotel early next year.&nbsp; <strong>Don<\/strong> <strong>Ho&#8217;s<\/strong> old showroom was  \t\t\t\tright there, so the atmosphere and acoustics should be right for  \t\t\t\ta little pickin&#8217; &amp; singin&#8217; eh Mr. Margaritaville?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Swanning about: Four  \t\t\t\tblack swans mysteriously appeared recently at Ala Moana Beach  \t\t\t\tPark.&nbsp; Sunday park goers were astonished at the sight;  \t\t\t\told-timers (and we <em>get<\/em> some OOOOLD-timahs) had never seen  \t\t\t\tthe like.&nbsp; Stately, poised and grand, the red-billed beauties  \t\t\t\tglided in formation while swimmers kept a respectful distance.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tThey seemed calm and tolerant of humans &#8211; though no one knows  \t\t\t\tWHERE they came from!&nbsp; All the nearby Hilton&#8217;s wildlife was  \t\t\t\taccounted for.&nbsp; (I mean, hey, would YOU leave free lifetime digs  \t\t\t\tat a destination resort?)&nbsp; And then, as mysteriously as they had  \t\t\t\tappeared . . . they were . . .gone.&nbsp; .&nbsp; .&nbsp;<\/p><div class=\"3a64bb57635b757d04b12bcf0c14b9a3\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; is once again tipped with snow.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tThe far off white peak, set&nbsp;against a blue tropic sky and  \t\t\t\twreathed in green swaying palms is one of the eternal images of  \t\t\t\tHawaii.&nbsp; Where else can you sled in the morning, ride a fine  \t\t\t\thorse over the high, open range of cowboy Waimea in the  \t\t\t\tafternoon, and surf Kohala&#8217;s gold-coast at Pau Hana (happy  \t\t\t\thour!) time?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Watching Oscar winner \t\t\t\t<strong>Chloris Leachman<\/strong> gamely dancing on TV got me thinking.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tIt was sort of jarring to see a mature woman being thrown around  \t\t\t\tlike that.&nbsp; I started musing about all the times I have seen  \t\t\t\tvery old, or very heavy women (and men!) dance hula in public.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tThey moved gracefully (or funny &#8211; Uncle!) and have never looked  \t\t\t\tanything less than <em>dignified<\/em> and <em>beautiful<\/em>.&nbsp; Sorry  \t\t\t\tfor the clich&eacute;s, but they fit this time.&nbsp; Our mature adults <em> are<\/em> graceful.&nbsp; They don&#8217;t try to copy the moves of the  \t\t\t\tyoung.&nbsp; They express their Aloha, and have learned the timeless  \t\t\t\tchoreography that hula shares with nature: swaying, reaching,  \t\t\t\tand embracing.&nbsp; In Hawaii, everyone <em>is<\/em> beautiful; and it  \t\t\t\thas zero to do with make-up, a perfect outfit, or conventional  \t\t\t\t&#8220;beauty.&#8221;&nbsp; Our tropic sun melts all pretension.&nbsp; Here, your  \t\t\t\tposture, grooming, Aloha, and facial expression are your  \t\t\t\tessential wardrobe.&nbsp;&nbsp;So come&nbsp;over sometime, and watch Tutu  \t\t\t\tdance.&nbsp; .&nbsp; .&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diamond<\/strong> <strong>Head<\/strong> summit, that famous and rewarding hike, will be closed until  \t\t\t\tNovember 20th.&nbsp; I really should make it up there  \t\t\t\tsomeday, but it&#8217;s been a busy 20 years in Waikiki!&nbsp; Don&#8217;t worry:  \t\t\t\tI&#8217;ll remember da camera \ud83d\ude09 . . . analog TV will be switched  \t\t\t\t&#8216;off&#8217; a bit early in the Islands (January 15th) out  \t\t\t\tof respect for the `Ua`u bird (Hawaiian Petrel) which breeds up  \t\t\t\ton the mountain tops in February, and might be disturbed by the  \t\t\t\tdismantling of analog power equipment in those wild places.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good News<\/strong>: a  \t\t\t\tnew study has determined that our&nbsp; &#8220;deep seven&#8221; bottomfish  \t\t\t\tspecies (Ehu, Gindai, Hapu`upu`u, Kalekale, Lehi, Onaga, and  \t\t\t\tfamous <strong>Opakapaka<\/strong>) remain more plentiful than previously  \t\t\t\tfeared!&nbsp; This means bigger limits for fishermen when the season  \t\t\t\topens November 15th.&nbsp; The fishery was &#8220;closed&#8221; last  \t\t\t\tApril when the standing &#8216;catch limit&#8217; was met . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tripatlas.com\/new\/Bishop%20Museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tripatlas.com\/new\/images\/articles\/waikikiobamamuseum.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Bishop Museum\" title=\"Bishop Museum\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>In 1904 an abandoned \t\t\t\t<strong>Hale Pili<\/strong> (grass shack) from Kauai was shipped to Oahu.&nbsp;  \t\t\t\tThe popular <strong>Bishop<\/strong> <strong>Museum<\/strong> exhibit is being  \t\t\t\trefurbished with now-rare Island Naio, Kauila, Uhiuhi, and Lama  \t\t\t\twoods.&nbsp; So if you &#8216;wanna go back to a little grass shack&#8217; pay a  \t\t\t\tvisit to the museum, which is a world center of Polynesian  \t\t\t\tStudies and a fun place to spend an afternoon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shout out:&nbsp; Big  \t\t\t\tmahalos to <strong>Kaye-Lani<\/strong> and Mr. <strong>Wing<\/strong> <strong>Chan<\/strong> at  \t\t\t\tHawaiian Telcom who efficiently swapped my dead computer modem  \t\t\t\tfor a lively one with professionalism and aloha.&nbsp; Thanks folks,  \t\t\t\tyou made it almost fun!&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Winter Tip<\/strong>: If you  \t\t\t\tsuffer from dry skin, or even a skin condition, do as the  \t\t\t\tHawaiians have long done:&nbsp;try soothing&nbsp;<strong>Kukui <\/strong> oil! \t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oilsofaloha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> www.oilsofaloha.com<\/a>.&nbsp; .&nbsp; .&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The other day I was  \t\t\t\tputting coins in the meter at <strong>Kapiolani<\/strong> <strong>Park<\/strong> when  \t\t\t\ta car pulled up in the adjacent spot.&nbsp; As the driver approached,  \t\t\t\tdigging in his pockets, I put a nickel in his meter and smiled.&nbsp;
