Generally, it\u2019s a better idea to travel a few weeks before or after the holiday rush.\u00a0 Thanksgiving until one week before Christmas and anytime after New Year\u2019s are the best times to travel: hotel prices and flights are cheaper and you won\u2019t have to fight the lineups.\u00a0 Also, if you book flights earlier on during the day, the less likely you are to get stuck in long lines and have a delayed flight.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Check-in online, print your boarding passes and check for delays before leaving home<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>No matter whether you booked your flight online or not, you can still check-in online.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be asked for some kind of combination of your name, flight number, booking number or credit card number.\u00a0 Most airlines allow passengers to check-in online 24 hours before the scheduled flight departure time.\u00a0 Once you check-in online, you can choose your seat and print your boarding pass from home.\u00a0 While you\u2019re at the computer, be sure to check for any flight delays or weather warnings so that you can decide about changing flights, leaving later or heading straight to the airport as scheduled.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget your passport!<\/p>\n<p>Once you arrive at the airport, you can go straight to the security gate with your home-printed boarding passes, unless you have bags or suitcases to check-in.\u00a0 Some airlines offer online check-in kiosks that have shorter lines since they\u2019re used exclusively for checking bags.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Get to the airport early to avoid lines, delays and getting bumped<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1123382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/drprem.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2017\/09\/Get-to-the-airport-early.jpg\" alt=\"Get to the airport early\" width=\"800\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drprem.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2017\/09\/Get-to-the-airport-early.jpg 800w, https:\/\/drprem.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2017\/09\/Get-to-the-airport-early-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/drprem.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2017\/09\/Get-to-the-airport-early-768x472.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>While I have always thought that my father\u2019s tradition of arriving at the airport 3-4 hours ahead of a scheduled flight (domestic or international!) was a little extreme, holiday season is an exception.<\/p>\n<p>Getting to the airport early is one of the best ways you can avoid long lineups, risk being late for your flight, or getting bumped from an overbooked flight.\u00a0 For international flights, it\u2019s recommended that you arrive 2 hours prior to departure \u2013 try arriving 2.5 to 3 hours ahead.\u00a0 For domestic flights, it\u2019s recommended that you arrive 1.5 hours or 90 minutes prior to departure \u2013 try arriving 2 hours before, instead.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that besides check-in lines, there\u2019s also a security check lineup that you have to go through.\u00a0 Make sure you have all your identification and documents ready so that you can get through the lines faster.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Packing doesn\u2019t have to be stressful or cause problems at the airport!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Packing is part of travelling but it can be a painful and stressful experience if you don\u2019t do it right.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, the rule I like to go by is: \u201cPack only what you can carry.\u201d\u00a0 That is, pack light and only what is necessary rather than for \u201cwhat if\u201d situations.\u00a0 Choose clothes that you can mix and match and bring multipurpose items (shoes, skirts) for both casual and dressy occasions.
