The immense photography power that modern digital point-and-shoot cameras pack in is lost to most newbie photographers. For many people contemplating taking up digital photography, there are a whole lot of questions that need answering, from megapixels to data card write speeds, and from histograms to white balance. The Digital Photography Handbook by Doug Harman helps amateur photographers master the maze of high end features and technical wizardry that these cameras contain. This 221-page guide from Quercus Books is now into its second edition and addresses most aspects of digital photography in an easy to understand format with abundant pictures and illustrative guides for common tasks.

Photography is a vast subject and this book tries to do as much justice to it as is possible in a book of this format. This is not a book for the professional photographer but more of an overview for those setting out to explore digital photography in a serious way. The book is divided into four sections, each covering an important aspect of digital photography.
The first section, Going Digital, guides you through what you will need to start out in digital photography in terms of camera specs, lenses, accessories and software. The second edition contains technical information that is more up to date.

The second section, Using Your Digital Camera, covers photography basics, like composition, focus, exposure and depth of field, and then addresses specialized photography techniques, like portraiture, sports, weddings, etc. Much of this is standard advise that applies to all forms of photography, digital or otherwise. Advanced readers may find this section to be a little too shallow for their liking. The third section, The Digital Darkroom, explores image editing and post production options, like cropping, color correction, etc.

The last section is called Output and deals with how to print, store, upload, and share your digital photography work. This section is relatively smaller than the others and for the technologically savvy reader, there may not be much here that they did not already know.
There is a vast amount of excellent information here that can guide a newcomer to digital photography through the intricacies of the art.

Many people realize the power of digital photography only after they buy a digital camera and then do not have a clue as to how best to put that power to use. For such people, this is an excellent starting point. However, there are several areas of information, mostly technical, which are grossly outdated, such as data cards and their specifications, image quality vis-a-vis megapixels, etc. Some of this can be attributed to the fact that even the updated edition is based on 2008 information, and the digital world has come a long way since then. Some of it, though, is difficult to comprehend given Doug Harman’s reputation as a photojournalist, such as inconsistent use of ;in’ and ‘mm’ when discussing image sizes.

The book is excellently produced and offers superb value for money. It is priced at 6.99 pounds (about $10) and is printed on glossy paper with beautifully apt photography by David Jones. With a heavy duty matt finished cover that helps keep the book free from damage, at 15 x 21 cm, The Digital Photography Handbook is just the right size to carry along with you as a handy reference when you are out practicing your art. The binding is comfortable and not too rigid and lets you open the book at any page you want while keeping the spine intact. The comprehensive index makes it easy to refer back and find material on any particular topic, though some of the entries take you to pages that are slightly off the topic.

Although an excellent effort at capturing a whole lot of information of a complex nature in a brief volume, this book is not going to impress those who are already familiar with digital photography or contemporary consumer electronics standards. However, it is a great one-stop-shop type of a book for a beginner or as a gift for someone planning to start using a digital camera.

The revolution in digital cameras has made it possible for amateur photographers to take pictures that are as good as professional ones.
