The project:

Take a look at the iPhone and then at the iPod, are they really that different. I mean, yes, the difference is obvious in the name, but are they? If you have used both the iPhone and the iPod, then you would know that from former you can call and hear music, and from the latter, you can only hear music. That’s all, no other difference is there. And what if you wouldn’t have to pay an extra $100 just for using call services and still can call your lover from your iPod? That’s our project for today, so bring out the techie in you and eat extra almonds for that added Grey cells. Now, we are ready to start.

Difficulty level:

If you are someone who was residing in a cave, et al Rip Van Winkle, snoring away while Steve Jobs was doing other important things like making iPhones and iPods, then yes it is difficult. But, if you are someone who has a working knowledge of computers and phones, it wouldn’t be much of an issue.

Time and resources required:

You require an iPod touch, a Wi-Fi connection, a VoIP app, a headset if you don’t want others to hear your conversation and patience.

Instructions:

Switch on your iPod, really, that’s the first thing you want to do. Now, there are many apps through which you can use to transform your iPod touch to iPhone. Like Skype. Skype enable you to call your friends anywhere in the world with the use of Wi-Fi. It may not make you feel exactly as if you are using a phone. But it’s a great substitute. But there are some quality issues, especially when you are dialing a real number. It works best when Skype-to-Skype.

Fring was the app which started the trend of video chat, VoIP calling, 3G from your iPod. If you are a SIP service subscriber, or if you have a GTalk account, then you can happily call everyone and anyone you want. Though it doesn’t offer you texting services, you can use Facebook, twitter, and instant messaging services like AIN, MSN, and ICQ for texting. Cost will depend on the service you want to use.

Line2 is one of the best phone apps out there. You can actually use it as a real phone. You can download it for free, but after 30 days, need to pay $10 a month. But this is surely less than many plan for the iPhone, so the cost is certainly not an issue. You get unlimited calling and texting in US and Canada. You can even forward the call to some other number if you want to. This app works smoothly and is the best.

Things to watch out for:

You are at the mercy of Wi-Fi. Outside your home, if you don’t have Wi-Fi close by, then all the apps in the world will fail to let you make a call. And as all these apps are free, you better download all, and use it as per your discretion.
