How to choose a multiroom audio system

Music lovers around the world devote a lot of time and money in selecting a proper and appropriate audio system for their home. They look for cost effectiveness, convenience of installation and use, portability, quality of sound, size, signal receiving and handling ability. Setting up a multi-room, wireless sound system has only been possible for in the last few years and has become a remarkably simple process now-a-days.

These systems use Wi-Fi or a similar wireless network to stream music from your computer to speakers around the house. A multisource system enables you to listen to something different in each entertainment zone/room while a single-source system lets you hear the same song in every zone/room. This gives freedom of choice to each and every member of the house or family to listen to whatever they want and whenever they like, without having to care about the choice of others. Kids can listen to hard rock or heavy metal or death metal in their room while the parents or couples can dip themselves in the romantic stuff.

For any multi-room system apps are readily available in the market, providing the ease of operation and ease of access to the type of music desired in each of the entertainment zones. The type of control depends on the user’s choice. It’s totally upon the user to decide whether he wants to go by the traditional wired system or a new Wi-Fi based wireless ones.

The wired systems are considered to be messy and costlier in the beginning but are more reliable. While the wireless systems are cheap and are much easier to use but they can create some trouble in the long run operation. There can be some problems with the reception of the signals in the wireless systems. They may suddenly stop playing a song in between for buffering the stream but not always and not with a proper receiver and control system.

Some of the expensive multi-room audio systems available in the market can stream music to as many as 30 different rooms in a house and employ a slick handheld panel with iPod-like controls that displays album art in full color. You can stream music from almost any source — music systems, iPods, record players or web-based services— to any or all of the other zones and different songs can even be simultaneously streamed to different zones. A basic two-room based system is pricey, at about $1000, but its cool factor is off the charts. It’s important though that with all of these network players, the fine print should be checked— some systems won’t play copy-protected music and have limited support for different file formats, such as FLAC.

As against the common belief, the multiroom audio systems are not very expensive. Considering the fact that providing a single room sound system in every room where music is desired can in many cases become more expensive than a planned system. Systems can range from simple and cost effective to expensive and complex. There are quality levels and there are feature levels all of which contribute to the price and user experience of the system. Also they are not too complicated. As any other hi-tech system/panel is considered complicated in the beginning but with regular usage and minor understanding of the controls on the panel, expertise can be obtained in no time.

A properly trained and well experienced professional installer may help in the selection of a proper system based on the needs of the user, architecture of his home and considering the other variables. Occasional snags may occur in even the costliest of equipments and even these systems are not totally immune to it. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) and its infamous “digital handshake” can present issues when wire runs are too long or improper switching equipment is used. Thus proper wiring, proper installation, and properly configured network that are fast and advanced is necessary. Keep the software and apps up-to-date and let the music play.
