Self-esteem – The light within- Live A Great Life Podcast by Dr Prem – Chapter. 21

Here is a quote – People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in,. their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.

—Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

We are shaped mostly by our opinion about ourselves. To make it all count, we need to understand the purpose we are here for, align our personality with our thoughts, and do meaningful stuff that could feed our self-esteem in a positive sense. In simple words, we need to understand ourselves first before we try to explore our potential.

A person with low self-esteem cannot relate to those who have average to high self-esteem. Since they always need to prove their worth but don’t know how to do it, the only way they can think of is a violent assertion of their fake confidence. Accordingly, you will see them getting angry about small issues and being arrogant, promiscuous, violent, and even suicidal in their approach.

Why self-esteem calls for the right balance

Balanced self-esteem makes individuals glow from within when they are faced with challenges or pitted against overwhelming odds. On the other hand, a slight lack of self-esteem can take their lives in a direction that they never expected it to. Low self-esteem, thus, calls for immediate action lest it starts playing havoc with the life of an individual.

Self-esteem takes you closer to a confident ‘you’

Self-esteem, etymologically speaking, is one’s understanding of their worth and abilities, which shapes and defines their overall personality. It’s about one’s opinion of one’s inner self, actions, talents and keenness to change. In fact, it’s the strongest single factor that makes you believe you can do it. It provides you with enough reason to believe that you always deserved what you have within you. Your high self-esteem further helps you believe that you will reach your destination in due course since you are capable of achieving anything that you put your mind to.

How to develop high self-esteem

Self-acceptance is undeniably the first step in the process of developing high self-esteem. We need to accept ourselves with all the talents, skills, qualities, and abilities we are born with; and that too, without losing sight of our weaknesses. Then again, when we focus on the positives and try to utilize them fully, the negative traits of our personality become less prominent. When we focus on our strengths and make them a part of our moral fiber, our self-esteem gets the required impetus to remove even the slightest traces of negativity.

Next, by broadening our social circle and interacting with individuals having high self-esteem, we can imbibe more positivity from them. Finally, yet no less importantly, avoid comparisons – you cannot be like others since you have an individuality and character of your own. When you compare yourself with others, you start labeling yourself and others as well. Avoid this practice if you want to have high
self-esteem.

Our self-esteem – be it low or high – has its influence on our thoughts, relationships, profession, and social life. When it is channeled in the right direction, you will find enough confidence to move out of your comfort zone and explore new possibilities. So what we need to do is simply have faith in what we are and find our worth accordingly.
