One bite at a time - Live A Great Life Podcast by Dr Prem – Chapter. 46

Here is a quote – When eating an elephant take one bite at a time.

—Creighton Abrams

Most people dump their life purpose midway as they are unable to keep pace with its momentum and complexity. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for the seeker to chunk down their purpose into smaller and manageable proportions that are achievable in a shorter timeframe. This deliberate breakdown of life purpose is called ‘chunking’. Whether you wish to reshape or redefine your career, start your own business, get in shape by shedding extra weight – chunking can help you realize your life purpose.

Why is chunking beneficial?

Chunking makes it possible for the seeker to mobilize their resources to accomplish their life purpose in a methodical and result-oriented manner. If you spend considerable time in contemplating the colossal distance between you and your life purpose, then you can become susceptible to stagnation.

It is human tendency to think about the future and secure it by all means. Thinking about a big purpose that would take years to accomplish is more likely to make you vulnerable to emotions like fear or complacency. Through chunking and a bit of mindfulness, you can proceed systematically. This will enable you to come at it with all your prowess and intensity, which better your chances of achieving what you have set for yourself. Besides, you will be able to control your negative emotions.

Accomplishing the fragments will offer you a sense of contentment and achievement, which in turn, will inspire and ready you for greater success in the times to come. It will also provide you with a breathing space to review your progress and evaluate what is working for you. Remember, the most admirable of journeys begin with small steps.

Go backwards from your ultimate purpose

The first step to moving towards achieving your goals is to have a comprehensive understanding of your life purpose. A vague understanding and approach would do more harm than good to your efforts. These fragments of your life purpose are simply identical, measured chunks of the larger purpose. The harder you strive to get past these small tasks, the easier it will be for you to reach your target.

Motivators and personal management mentors agree that taking a step backwards from your ultimate purpose is the ‘first visible step’ in chunking. For instance, you are an entrepreneur who strives to launch a new product in the market. You need to consider why the customer would be interested in the product, how you will communicate with them, and what would be the perfect price of the said product when it strikes the market. Once you have undertaken this exercise will you be able to develop a product that has a requirement in the market?

By logically calculating everything you need to realize your purpose, you can create tasks and a timeframe. Allotting a reasonable timeframe for the manageable tasks is vital since it will keep you focused and enable you to pace yourself to a nicety.

Define what’s ‘manageable’ for you

Individuals differ in terms of their work ethics and the ability to take the pressure, which implies that the ability to manage the same task differs from individual to individual. Many seekers are unsuccessful merely because they fail to set achievable limits for themselves. At times, they overestimate their potential to tide over the prevailing predicaments or underestimate the task. Both these conditions are undesirable as far as achieving life purpose is concerned.

Stuffing too many tasks into your daily schedule may leave you disgruntled, especially when you are unable to keep pace with them. This will demoralize you into abandoning your life purpose midway. You need time and energy to attend to your daily chores, which are equally important. Hence, stretch yourself according to your situation, time and resources. Declutter is the buzzword for chunking.
