This prevents further infection of the pulp and saves the tooth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it is needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mostly root canal is performed to treat the infection of the pulp called \u2018pulpitis\u2019 and to prevent further tooth decay. The conditions in which root canal is advised include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe toothache while chewing or biting<\/li>\n<li>Tooth sensitivity to heat and cold<\/li>\n<li>Swelling near the tooth, or discoloration of it<\/li>\n<li>Tooth is broken<\/li>\n<li>X-ray findings suggest signs of infection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Facts and Figures:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost everyone considers root canal treatment as the most painful and difficult of all dental treatment, but in reality this is not true.<\/li>\n<li>It is estimated that more than 14 million root canal treatments are performed every year in the United States, with a 95% success rate. Quit smoking.<\/li>\n<li>X-rays of the tooth to discover the state of the tooth infection<\/li>\n<li>Obtain advice on prescribed medication and medication to be discontinued<\/li>\n<li>Ask a friend or relative to accompany you for post procedure assistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Post-operative care:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There will be a feeling of numbness at the lips and around the mouth and cheeks immediately after the procedure; this will go away completely within 3-4 hours\u2014until then the patient should avoid chewing.<\/li>\n<li>A temporary filling or crown is placed in the root canal treated tooth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Do&#8217;s, Don&#8217;ts and Precautions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t worry if a small portion of a temporary filling may wears away or breaks off.<\/li>\n<li>Do rinse three times a day with warm salt water to control pain and swelling.<\/li>\n<li>Do take prescribed medications on time.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid chewing sticky foods.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid hard foods and substances, for e.g. ice, fingernails and pencils.<\/li>\n<li>Do continue to brush and floss regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"fdfd521071161cba44192976af7f7799\" data-index=\"3\" style=\"float: none;
