This surgery is performed by a specially qualified and trained surgeon, known as an Oral &amp; Maxillofacial surgeon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it is needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The conditions in which maxillofacial surgery is advised include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facial injuries due to severe accidents<\/li>\n<li>Birth deformities<\/li>\n<li>Severe orthodontic deformities<\/li>\n<li>Gum disease<\/li>\n<li>Cancer patients with facial tumour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Facts and Figures:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maxillofacial surgery is one of the nine specialties of dentistry.<\/li>\n<li>Hugo Obwegeser was honoured as a pioneer in orthognathic (facial skeletal) surgery; he has been instrumental in introducing the orthognathic surgical technique to US surgeons in the 1960s.<\/li>\n<li>The famous surgeon Luc Chikhani reconstructed Trevor Rees-Jones\u2019s face, who had severe facial injuries due to the car crash that killed Diana, Princess of Wales.<\/li>\n<li>Cases of maxillofacial injuries are common in emergency medicine.<\/li>\n<li>More than 3 million facial injuries occur in the United States each year. Most of them are victims of motor vehicle accidents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Advantages and Disadvantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Advantages:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maxillofacial surgery corrects the deformities and treats the injuries.<\/li>\n<li>Improves appearance of a face that has been disfigured by injuries or tumour and helps patients regain self-esteem and confidence.<\/li>\n<li>Relief from pain and discomfort caused by gum disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Disadvantages:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Permanent facial deformity due to improper treatment<\/li>\n<li>Damage to the facial nerves resulting in loss of sensation, facial movement, smell and\/ or taste<\/li>\n<li>There could be rejection of bone graft and non union of fractured bone<\/li>\n<li>Scars on the face<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Risks and Complications:<\/strong><\/p><div class=\"fdfd521071161cba44192976af7f7799\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; doctor will prescribe necessary medication and advice on medicines that have to be discontinued.<\/li>\n<li>Inform the surgeon about smoking and alcohol consumption patterns.<\/li>\n<li>Arrangements for leave from work, help at home, help with driving and during post surgery recovery period.<\/li>\n<li>Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Medical tourists are advised to select a comfortable hotel room equipped with handicapped facilities, for recovery after hospital discharge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Post-operative care:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Patients need to take medication regularly as instructed by the surgeon to control pain and ensure proper healing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Do&#8217;s, Dont&#8217;s and Precautions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not rinse or spit for 24 hours after surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Keep fingers and tongue away from socket or surgical area.<\/li>\n<li>Do use ice packs on surgical area (side of face) for first 24 hours; apply ice 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off.<\/li>\n<li>Do drink plenty of fluids (do not use a straw).<\/li>\n<li>Chewing gum at intervals will help to relax the stiffness of muscles.<\/li>\n<li>Use of warm, moist heat to the outside of face over muscles will help to reduce stiffness in the jaw.<\/li>\n<li>Do rinse with warm salt water following each meal, after the first post operative day.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid seeds, nuts, rice, popcorn, etc; instead eat soft, easily chewable food.<\/li>\n<li>Apply pressure to surgical area using small rolled gauze for 90 minutes to control bleeding.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t smoke until the wound heals properly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"fdfd521071161cba44192976af7f7799\" data-index=\"3\" style=\"float: none;
