In some patients the Homo graphs&#8212;donated by a human donor are also used. The metal valves are stronger and last longer compared to the animal tissue valve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it is needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Narrow heart valve\/leaky heart valve<\/li>\n<li>Medication<\/li>\n<li>Infection<\/li>\n<li>Calcium deposits<\/li>\n<li>Birth defect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The symptoms caused by a defective heart valve are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Palpitation<\/li>\n<li>Breathlessness on slight effort.<\/li>\n<li>Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea (PND)\u2014sudden breathing difficulty at night or early morning\u00a0that wakes patient from sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Black outs\u2014a symptom caused by narrowing of aortic valves.<\/li>\n<li>High temperature<\/li>\n<li>Angina<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Facts and Figures:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first successful aortic valve replacement with caged-ball artificial valve, performed by Hufnagel in 1952, led many heart surgeons to engage in further research about the treatment of aortic stenosis, which was considered incurable before the 1950s.<\/li>\n<li>Aortic stenosis is considered the third most common cardiovascular disease, mainly present as a congenital defect; found in almost 4 in 1000 live births.<\/li>\n<li>According to AHA approximately 99,000 heart valve surgeries are performed each year in America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Advantages &amp; Disadvantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Advantages:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High success rate of the surgery.<\/li>\n<li>A successful surgery relieves the patient from debilitating symptoms and prevents the risk of heart failure.<\/li>\n<li>About 80%of patients who survive the first post operative year are able to return to their normal activities.<\/li>\n<li>The replaced animal tissue valve generally lasts a long time, whereas the mechanical valve may last for a lifetime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Disadvantages:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Patients, who choose to go with a metal valve, need to be on blood thinner medicines throughout their life to reduce the risk of developing blood clots.<\/li>\n<li>Risk of developing leakage or malfunctioning, which may require another surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Approximately 5% mortality risk is involved with surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Longer recovery period especially for the elderly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Risks &amp; Complications: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infection<\/li>\n<li>Bleeding<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: windowtext\">Breathing problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: windowtext\">Heart attack or stroke<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: windowtext\">Lack of mental clarity\/confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: windowtext\">Kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: windowtext\">Heart rhythm problems\u2014arrhythmia<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Medicinal or anaesthesia reaction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pre-operative preparations:<\/strong><\/p><div class=\"fdfd521071161cba44192976af7f7799\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/drprem.com\/medical-tourism\/marketing\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/drprem.com\/medical-tourism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2021\/12\/Medical-Tourism-Post-Ad-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid dental treatment before surgery or take antibiotics as per the surgeon\u2019s advice.<\/li>\n<li>Complete physical examination<\/li>\n<li>Blood and urinalysis<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic tests like ECG, stress tests, cardiac catheterization, X-rays.<\/li>\n<li>Consultation with surgeon or doctor a week prior to surgery; doctor will advise you on prescribed medications and medicines that need to be discontinued.<\/li>\n<li>Inform the surgeon about smoking and alcohol consumption patterns. Quit smoking.<\/li>\n<li>Notify the surgeon if you develop a cold, fever or sore throat a few days before surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Arrangements with family and\/or friends to help during the post-operative rehabilitation.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare home as per the requirements recovery after the surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery.<\/li>\n<li>The medical tourist is advised to plan for an extended trip and purchase a flexible ticket because he\/she may be required to stay at the destination longer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Post-operative care:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Usually a patient needs to stay at the hospital for 7-10 days after the surgery, including the first few days in the intensive care unit (ICU). Patient\u2019s vital statistics will be monitored constantly.<\/li>\n<li>The drainage tube will be removed within 1-3 days after surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Medication will be given to prevent infection and blood clotting.<\/li>\n<li>There will be discomfort in the chest during activity for about 2 months.<\/li>\n<li>Cardiac rehabilitation will commence once patient becomes stable within a few days of the surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dos, Don\u2019ts and Precautions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do keep the incision clean and dry.<\/li>\n<li>Do walk daily as per the instructions of the surgeon.<\/li>\n<li>Patients on blood thinners may need to follow certain precautions and may need to have blood tests done from time to time.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the prescribed lifestyle changes for optimum results from the surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Quit smoking.<\/li>\n<li>Do maintain a healthy weight with proper diet and exercise.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in post cardiac rehabilitation program.<\/li>\n<li>Do take the prescribed medication meticulously.<\/li>\n<li>Be regular at follow up visits with surgeon and physician.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The recovery after the valve replacement surgery may take a comparatively long time, especially in elderly patients. The health status of the patient before surgery also plays an important role in the recovery.
