In order to completely understand the concept of medical tourism<\/a> one needs to be aware of terms associated with it. If Medical Tourism<\/strong> is \u201cthe set of activities in which a person travels often long distance or across the border to avail medical services with direct or indirect engagement in tourism activities\u201d the person who travels to avail medical service is called \u201cmedical tourist\u201d or \u201cMedical Traveler\u201d. The organization that provides healthcare services to the traveler or patient is called \u201cMedical tourism provider<\/a>\u201d or a \u201cGlobal Healthcare Provider\u201d. The company or agency that provides support services to facilitate such arrangements is known as a \u201cMedical Tourism Facilitator\u201d<\/a>. All these activities, components and entities are referred as \u201cMedical Tourism industry\u201d.<\/p>

Medical Tourism is often interchanged with the terms \u201cMedical Travel\u201d, \u2018Health Travel\u201d \u201cHealthcare Travel\u201d \u201cHealth Tourism<\/a>\u201d and \u201cGlobal Healthcare\u201d. Although each term has a specific meaning, they all fall into the description of individuals travelling abroad for any type of medical, quasi-medical or health treatment. It also describes the growing global industry of healthcare professionals, clinics and hospitals who are marketing themselves to overseas patients.<\/p>\n

I have recently conducted a survey based on the terms and trends of medical tourism and invited leading medical tourism experts to participate in the research.\u00a0 The preferred term for 85% respondents for this particular sector of the healthcare industry is \u2018Medical Tourism,\u2019 with 35% selecting this option. \u2018Global Healthcare\u2019 was the next most popular term at 22%, with \u2018Health Tourism\u2019 running a close third at 21%. \u2018Medical Travel\u2019 was identified by 10% of respondents as their preferred description, with \u2018Healthcare Travel\u2019 and \u2018Value Medical Travel\u2019 both at 6%. Note: In Dr Prem\u2019s Guidebook \u2013 Medical Tourism, we have used the term \u201cmedical tourism\u201d as a generalized term that could be interchanged with similar terms such as \u201cMedical Travel\u201d \u201cHealth Tourism\u201d or \u201cHealthcare Travel\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n
