Mum tried to drum it out of me by explaining how shyness is a form of selfishness. She would tell me being shy was merely thinking of oneself, rather than wanting to make other people happy.

—Richard Branson

Apart from being a form of selfishness, shyness might become an imperfection of character if we don’t work on it. Shyness categorically means an unknown fear of the world around, apprehensions about people and processes, diffidence and, of course, reluctance to reach out to others. Unless we do something about it at the right earnest, our prospects might suffer. Thus, try to come out of your shell, feel the difference and enjoy life.

Labeled shy or shy actually?

Those labeled shy can heave a sigh of relief since it’s just an opinion that might not hold true for them at all. They don’t need to do anything about their personality since what others think as shyness is actually their willingness to accommodate others. They just need to try learning to accommodate themselves and life will be more fabulous than they would probably have imagined. On the other hand, those of us who have a low or weak self-image need to do some serious work. We should learn some tricks to discover our unique abilities. Such a revelation will make us feel good about our personalities and eventually boost our self-confidence.

Expand your friend circle and social network

For better opportunities and personal growth, be proactive in your approach, demeanor, and deportment. Make it a habit to attend meetings to understand what differentiates a shy soul from those who master the art of delivering effective presentations. Furthermore, try to push the envelope and observe how others react or respond to your transformation. You will find there are several people around you ready to help whenever you reach out to them. Making friends with strangers in the new environment also allows you a chance to project yourself as someone that you always wanted to be. Don’t let go of such opportunities; you will learn new ways of overcoming your shyness.

Never ever go after escapism and perfectionism

What most shy individuals tend to do is find a comfort zone that they will never try to come out of which further instills the sense of escapism in their personality. Rather than escaping from demanding or uncomfortable situations, take the bull by its horns. If you can do it once, you can do it again as well. Furthermore, don’t follow those who advocate the philosophy of perfectionism. Such pursuance might not allow you the room to improvise on your weakness (inherent nature, i.e., shyness). Those who follow perfectionism have higher chances of becoming even shyer if their endeavors don’t fetch the desired results.

Don’t take rejections personally

The way you handle rejections can be instrumental in realizing your dream of shunning shyness or detrimental to the success of other related endeavors if taken in the wrong spirit. Maybe you were a part of a scenario that was never meant for you; hence, instead of lamenting over what could have been done, make it a point to do it the next time without fail. Try to learn from such experiences. Once you find the lesson, move on without wallowing in self-pity.

Turn your shyness into self-awareness

Shyness is never something that cannot be worked upon; instead, it reduces to nothing when one is willing to work on situations that trigger the feeling of shyness. Thanks to the modern work culture and busy lifestyle, no one has time to observe others’ mannerisms. Thus, shy folks have ample time to turn their shyness into self-awareness, and accordingly find ways to improve their life as well.

Just be confident and visualize success

Confidence makes things easier than otherwise. After all, anyone would love to communicate, coordinate and be with a confident individual who takes life as it comes. Since shyness is not insuperable, you can always take your self-confidence and self-esteem to its next, higher level.

The easiest way to do it is by visualizing success and preparing yourself for it, day in and day out.

<div class="354432276130f0c48f468f184f134530" data-index="3" style="float: none;
