Top Movies<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Like any “Top 10”<\/strong> list of anything, this list is by no means exhaustive but a selection from hundreds of great movies<\/strong> that impacted a generation and left us with a deeper understanding of manhood, growing up and the consequences of our actions.<\/p>\n

As young men who grew up in the late 80\u2019s and 90\u2019s, the launch of the DVD and flat screen TV\u2019s changed how we watched movies. No longer did we have to go to the theater to get the cinematic experience. No young mans life<\/strong> is complete without great movies, and the list below, in no particular order, is of the 10 movies that every young man must watch.<\/strong><\/p>

10 Outstanding Movies Every Man Must Watch<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. Goodfellas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If I had to choose any movie amongst the many gangster movies such as Casino<\/strong>, Carlitos Way, Scarface <\/strong><\/em>and<\/strong> Once Apon a Time in America<\/strong>,<\/em> I have to choose Martin Scorsese’s<\/a><\/strong> masterpiece, Goodfellas<\/em><\/strong>. Apart from an incredible cast of Robert De Niro<\/a>, Joe Pesci<\/a><\/strong> and Ray Liotta<\/a><\/strong>, the story of real life gangster Henry Hills<\/a><\/strong> rise from a teenager interested in the local gangs, to becoming a real life gangster himself is told with Scorsese\u2019s precise use of period music and cinematography, as well as the entire cast complementing each other in every way. Goodfellas<\/em> <\/strong>explores the criminal life in gruesome detail and tells in with great humor, and realism.<\/p>\n

2. Forrest Gump<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Forrest Gump<\/em><\/strong> is not a smart man but in his own words \u2018Stupid is as stupid does\u2019<\/em><\/strong>. We follow his life from a childhood filled with bullying to a life filled with first-hand experience of some of the most important events of the last century. Apart from meeting multiple US presidents, Elvis Presley, and speaking at the Anti-War Rally at the Washington Monument, Forrest also serves on the front line of the Vietnam War and beats the Chinese ping pong team. The most important aspect of this movie is that Forrest is never trying and merely accidentally stumbles into these strange and wonderful experiences with good intentions. He never forgets his young love<\/strong>, Jenny, and points out that destiny may play a bigger role in our lives than we know.<\/p>\n

3. Blow<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Based on the real life of George Jung<\/a><\/strong>, dope runner turned Cocaine boss in the 1970s\/80s, Blow<\/em> takes us on a journey of starting as a small time dope dealer, to dealing with Colombian drug cartels and making millions. George is played brilliantly by Johnny Depp<\/a><\/strong> and through him, we are told the story of his hopes, dreams, greed, success<\/strong>, betrayal and of course his eventual demise. A great cast including Penelope Cruz<\/a><\/strong> (as his beautiful Latina wife) and Ray Liotta<\/a><\/strong> (as his hard working blue collar father) make this a movie that you can watch over and over again.<\/p>\n

4. Godfather I, II, and III<\/strong><\/h3>\n

No list of top movies is complete without the Godfather Trilogy<\/em><\/strong>. Where does someone start with a review of the Godfather<\/em><\/strong>? The cast, of Marlon Brando<\/a>, Robert De Niro<\/a>, Al Pacino<\/a><\/strong> and so many more. The story, of the Corleone<\/a><\/strong> family and their merciless rise is beautifully told. This movie is epic and has influenced a generation of movie goers and movie makers. With glorious acting and storytelling, this movie has everything and the trilogy is the best way to spend a Sunday. Or every Sunday.<\/p>\n

5. Gladiator<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ridley Scotts<\/a><\/strong> incredible Gladiator<\/em><\/strong> is a demonstration of all that is good and bad in the world. General Maximus Decimus Meridius<\/strong> is powerful, honorable, and courageous<\/strong>. His rival, the emperor Commodus<\/a><\/strong> is a coward, dishonorable, and weak although he wields power after his fathers (Emperor Marcus Aurelius<\/strong> of Meditations<\/strong> fame) death who Commodus murdered. The epic battle scenes in this movie are unrivaled and the story will stay with you long after you watch the movie.

6. The Shawshank Redemption<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This movie famously failed when it came out in theaters but right now, its sits at No.1 on IMDBs<\/strong> Top 250<\/a><\/strong> Movies of all time. The movies success<\/strong> is purely down to word of mouth as it had no marketing or publicity of any sort prior to its release in theaters. Tim Robbins<\/a><\/strong> plays a banker named Andy who’s sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge. During his life imprisonment, he becomes friends with Red, played by Morgan Freeman<\/a><\/strong>. Andy’s quiet exterior hides his motives, and the movie teaches us the importance of patience and resilience, two characteristics that eventually work in Andy’s favor.<\/p>\n

Best line: Red: “Andy Dufresne – who crawled through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

7. Saving Private Ryan<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steven Spielberg\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> epic war movie Saving Private Ryan<\/em><\/strong> tells the story of the Normandy invasions of World War II<\/strong> and it has one of the most incredible 15 minutes of any movie. Worth getting a brand new surround sound system and a top of the range TV for, the movie tells the story of Private Ryan, played by Matt Damon<\/a><\/strong>, who loses three of his brothers in battle and a group of soldiers lead by Tom Hanks<\/a><\/strong>, who go on a desperate rescue mission to return him safe to his family. Brilliantly acted and with war scenes that make you feel a part of the action, this movie is a real story of courage and brotherhood.<\/p>\n

8. Fight Club<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Starring Edward Norton<\/a> <\/strong>and Brad Pitt<\/a><\/strong>, Fight Club<\/em><\/strong> is a story of a man going through the day to day numb to the world, and how he starts an underground anarchist group with the help of a man he meets on a plane, Tyler Durden<\/strong>. Together they find a way to get away from the mundane by fighting. They fight each other and soon, others begin to join them. Based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk<\/strong>, this movie is a warning of the decay of society told with the help of great humor and graphic violence. It\u2019s a movie you have to see again and again, just to get the parts of it that you missed.<\/p>\n

9. The Matrix<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There is a reason that the entire Trilogy<\/strong> isn\u2019t on the list. The Matrix<\/em> stood on its own for a number of years, and as a single movie, blew away anything that had ever come close to it. With breakthroughs in technology and cinematography, the Wachowskis<\/a> <\/strong>created one of the best sci fi\/action<\/strong> movies of the 90\u2019s. A movie that could be enjoyed purely for its action scenes, also had many social and philosophical <\/strong>commentaries. This movie will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action, and adventure fans alike.<\/p>\n

10. The Dark Knight<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The follow up to Batman Begins<\/strong>, The Dark Knight<\/em><\/strong> is arguably the best of Christopher Nolans<\/a> Batman trilogy<\/strong>, largely due to the late Heath Ledgers<\/a><\/strong> Oscar winning performance as The Joker<\/strong>, who pushes Gotham City to the brink of total chaos.\u00a0 With compelling writing, stunning visuals and exceptional realism, The Dark Knight<\/em> <\/strong>is a superb modern day super hero movie.<\/p>\n
