However, 3D printing is very expensive and it\\&#8217;s quite polluting too. But we still have designers that are trying to use nature\u2019s own methods to create 3D printed furniture.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;line-height: 1.45em\">&nbsp;The latest example of this comes to us courtesy<br \/>\nof Philadelphia University students Brian McClellan and Merjan Tara Sisman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hometone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/1_bmis71.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default\"><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The designers are currently working on a project what aims<br \/>\nat trying to incorporate living materials into the production of furniture. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hometone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/2_nhqjy.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default\"><\/p>\n<p>Dubbed \\&#8217;the living room project\\&#8217;, the range of furniture<br \/>\nuses mycelium, the fungus that can be understood as being one half of a<br \/>\nmushroom seed, as the basis for what can be thought of as organic 3D printing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hometone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/3_tu4wu.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default\"><\/p>\n<p>Since the fungus basically grows and grows until it is mated<br \/>\nto another kind of fungus before it can bear mushrooms, it can be molded into<br \/>\nobjects. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hometone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/4_dwnfy.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default\"><\/p>\n<p>The designers used this particular property of the fungus to<br \/>\nfabricate furniture through a zero energy process by simply controlling the growth<br \/>\nof the organism.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hometone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/5_9onfo.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default\"><\/p>\n<p>For the range, McClellan has designed a set of pendant<br \/>\nlights while Sisman has designed a chair and both objects use only the living<br \/>\ncomposite as their core material. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hometone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/6_bjplz.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default\"><\/p>\n<p>The designers have not stated whether the furniture and lights<br \/>\nstill have living organisms within them upon completion or whether these items<br \/>\nwould just be as susceptible to rotting and degenerating as most living<br \/>\norganisms are known to do. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hometone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/7_xrqog.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The designers also haven\u2019t stated whether the items have a<br \/>\nshelf life or not and whether they would attract other living organisms (that<br \/>\nfeed on fungi) to spaces in which these unique items are placed.
