At the same time, a tendency toward cutting <strong>Earth&#8217;s energy intensity<\/strong> (the ratio of how much energy is needed to produce a unit of gross domestic product) appears to have <strong>stalled or even reverse<\/strong>d in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Field, of the Carnegie Institution&#8217;s Department of Global Ecology in Stanford, California, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The study has found that between 2000 and 2004, worldwide carbon dioxide emissions increased by 3.1 percent a year, about three times as fast as the 1.1 percent rate of increase in the 1990s.<\/p><div class=\"38520354a5201685ddf480eec688e1a7\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9477973674766713\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"8885944693\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The study has found that the d<strong>eveloping world, including India and China, and some of the least-developed countries accounted for 73 percent of the growth in global emissions<\/strong> in 2004 and contain about 80 percent of world population. By contrast, the study said the world&#8217;s richest countries contributed about <strong>60 percent of total emissions in 2004 and account for 77 percent of cumulative<\/strong> emissions since the start of the Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>This study goes to reinforce what environmentalists have been saying all along.
