This floating island was created by British ecologist Richie Sowa in 1998 in a lagoon near Puerto Aventuras, using thousands of recycled plastic bottles, mangrove trees and other materials. Richie filled nets with used plastic bottles to support a ply-bamboo structure and to help them stay afloat. He used some 250,000 bottles for the 66ft (20 m) by 54 ft (16 m) structure. Then, he poured sand over the netting to make it inhabitable. A hut, solar oven and a self-composting lavatory lent a sure grace to the place, turning it into a fabulous cottage. Also, you could find three beaches on the island. Despite the devastation caused by Hurricane Emily in 2005, Sowa has started to reinstate the mission again i.e. constructing another island.<\/p><div class=\"38520354a5201685ddf480eec688e1a7\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none;
