Exasperated parents often see it as a shortcoming on part of the child and try to deal with it by reprimands and punishment. Children end up confused and perplexed, as they are unable to either comprehend or control it. To make matters worse, the condition often persists past the early years, adding to the trauma and self esteem issues of older children. It is estimated that nearly one in five children between 4 and 16 years of age are afflicted by this condition, with boys outnumbering girls. Here are some basic facts that you should know in order to deal appropriately with bedwetting.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-9477973674766713"
     data-ad-slot="8885944693"></ins>

1. Bedwetting is a sleep disorder
Most cases of bedwetting are a result of a sleep disorder. The sleeping child is not aware of the urge to urinate or be perceptive of the brain cues indicating that the bladder is full. The medical term for bedwetting is enuresis. Bedwetting can occur during daytime sleep as well.
2. Bedwetting is a common disorder
Bedwetting brings with it an element of shame for the child as well as the parents. As a result, it is not discussed openly. This leads to many people believing that this is something that is happening only to them. Bedwetting is estimated to afflict between 15-20 percent of school going children.
3. Bedwetting is not a psychological problem
A common misconception among parents is that bedwetting is a reflection of some deep-seated emotional or mental problem. This belief leads to further guilt and shame about the condition among the family. However, this is not the case. It is a sleep disorder and a developmental delay and nothing more.
4. Bedwetting follows a genetic pattern
Studies have shown that the chances of your child developing bedwetting problems are increased by more than 70 percent if both parents had bedwetting problems as children. This chance reduces to 40 percent if only one parent had bedwetting problems.
5. Bedwetting frequently resolves by itself
About 85 percent of children with bedwetting problems outgrow the condition without any help. The body has a remarkable ability to learn and cope. As the child’s body and brain start identifying and understanding the mechanics of bedwetting, they also start developing the ability to address it. Most children overcome bedwetting by the age of 7 and almost all children overcome it by age of 10. If your child is exhibiting bedwetting behavior beyond this age, you will want to consult a physician who specializes in this field of treatment.
6. Bedwetting is a learning process
Somewhere around the age of 18-24 months, children learn to connect the feeling of bladder fullness to the act of bladder emptying or urinating. Next is learning to inhibit the bladder-emptying reflex, or being able to hold back the urge until the child is able to reach to the toilet. This is easy during the daytime, but becomes more complicated during the sleeping hours. Most children acquire this proficiency of being able to inhibit nighttime bladder emptying reflex with time. For children with bedwetting problems, it takes longer.
7. Bedwetting can recur in some children
Primary enuresis is the medical term for bedwetting in a child who has never had dry nights. In some cases, however, the child may develop bedwetting after having more than 6 months of dry
nights. This condition is known as secondary bedwetting. In such instances, your pediatrician will want to look into possible reasons for this development before deciding on a course of treatment.
8. Bedwetting cannot be cured by scolding or punishing
Reprimands and punishment are counterproductive in the case of bedwetting and can actually harm the fragile psyche of the child. Once the child is aware of the fact he or she is wetting the bed at night, there is already an element of shame of poor self-image. If the parents scold and punish the child, this feeling worsens and adds to the self-esteem issues of the child. A sleep disorder that the child has no control over may develop into a psychological problem because of this approach.
9. Bedwetting can be understood by children
It has been found helpful to discuss the mechanics of bedwetting in easy-to-understand terms with the child. Once the child becomes aware that there is a delay between his urge to urinate at night, his ability to get up and go to the toilet, his or her learning process will take over and he will start addressing this delay. You may also want to look for books and literature on bedwetting written and designed for children.
10. Bedwetting can be addressed positively

Rewarding the child for nights, that he or she does not wet the bed or for being able to wake up and go to the toilet at night will reinforce the newly learned behavior. This has proved to be the most successful approach to bedwetting.

Via: Askdrsears

Recent Articles:

Bedwetting is a poorly understood condition that comes with various shades of complexity.
