Do you know, the seismic jolt that unleashed the deadly tsunami on the Solomons recently, has lifted an entire island meters out of the sea?! Yes, it did, and along with it, some of the world’s most pristine coral reefs are destroyed.
The 8.0 magnitude earthquake that grinded the Earth’s tectonic plates, has forced the island of Ranongga up three meters i.e 10 feet!
The submerged reefs, the one-time attraction for scuba divers from around the globe, now lie exposed and are slowly dying as the quake raised the 32-kilometer (20-mile) long and 8-kilometer (5-mile) wide mountainous landmass.
The corals, which once used to form an underwater wonderland with their iridescent blues, greens and reds now bleach under the sun. They are getting transformed into a barren moonscape surrounding the island.
The cataclysmic shift of the island has changed its geography forever, pushing the shoreline by up to 70 meters out to sea!
