Tips to paint and arrange your decorate the Feng Shui way

Pronounced as Fung Shway, Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice of object placement, space arrangement and wall decoration that takes into account the effect of the elements wind and water. The art basically groups everything in a space into either the Yang or Yin energy flows. While Yang exhibits vigor, excitement, restlessness and rapidity, Yin exhibits relaxation, slowness, coldness, passivity, tranquility and gentleness. And according to Feng Shui norms, any place in the house should possess an equal balance of Yang and Yin energy in order to allow ‘Chi’ (the life force) to flow freely around the house.

If you are deciding to accommodate Feng Shui principles in your home décor, especially the bedroom, then here are some tips you need to follow to achieve the same.

Feng Shui Color Coordination

Every color in Feng Shui is categorized as either the soothing Yin color or the exciting Yang color. A bedroom being a place of relaxation, it is imperative that it contains more yin colors as too many yang colors would lead to restlessness and tension. Complete lack of Yang colors on the other hand would also lead to laziness and lack of motivation.

Accordingly, some of the color combinations that are frequently used in Feng Shui for bedrooms include:

Blue and Green: Green is used to denote good health, growth, longevity and rebirth while blue is used to denote inner peace, calmness and flexibility.

Red, Gold and Purple: Typically Yang colors, red, gold and purple signify luck, wealth and prosperity, and can be used in moderate amounts for decorations inside the bedroom.

White, Black and Grey: These Feng Shui colors denote career growth, with white signifying mental strength and creativity, black denoting insightfulness and good income and grey denoting confidence and self-empowerment. Note: Black needs to be used in moderate amounts as it can absorb negative chi energy.

Yellow, Pink and Orange: The best colors for romance and relationships. Pink creates positive energy for couples in the bedroom while yellow tends to induce tolerance and acceptance. Orange on the other hand, can improve understanding and passion between couples.

Feng Shui Object Placement

Here are some tips when it comes to placing objects in your bedroom according to Feng Shui principles.

Bed Position

Keep the bed far away from the door, on the corner of the room that is diagonal to the door. This would promote safety and relaxation. Place the head of the bed against a solid wall (a headboard can also be used to achieve the same) while making sure the other end does not touch a wall.

Don’t place the head of the bed against a window which could cause exhaustion and mental fatigue. Avoid placing the bed underneath ceiling fans, skylights, overhead beams and slanted ceilings as this would also cause negative energy to spread in the room.

The space in front of the bed needs to be wide and roomy, promoting the expansion and improvement of life according to Feng Shui practices. Avoid sleeping directly on the floor (on a mattress) as there needs to be some space between the mattress and the ground for the chi energy to circulate in the room. Do not store anything under the bed as well as this would block the free movement of Chi energy.

Refrain from placing computers, televisions or exercise equipment in the bedroom as they increase yang energy. Consider placing objects in pairs (for ex: two lampshades, two nightstands, two candles etc.) as this would increase romance. Don’t place mirrors opposite the bed as this would reflect back negative Chi energy, thereby worsening your worries and concerns.

Summary

You can follow these important Feng Shui tips when decorating your bedroom. Remember, a small adjustment here and there would go a long way to keeping you hale, hearty and happy for years.
