German designer Elisa Strozyk has come up with a new, innovative furniture design in collaboration with artist Sebastian Neeb. The “Accordion Cabinet” is in keeping with Strozyk’s penchant of playing around with wooden textiles.
Displayed as part of [D3] Design Talents at IMM Cologne-2011, the piece of storage furniture comprises an exterior layer of wood made from lamellas of different veneers. These then have been folded to resemble an accordion. Each of the laser-cut pieces of wood has been subsequently affixed manually onto a textile base. The unique combination of materials lends the wood an appearance of flexibility and fluidity, similar to that of a piece of fabric. The accordion hides the accompanying shelves within, as it wraps itself shut around a rectangular base.
