How to choose a home improvement contractor

Opting for a home improvement project can turn out to be a stressful experience, if not handled properly. Instead of doing everything yourself, consider investing in a home improvement contractor to do the job for you. However, you need to be extremely careful when choosing a home improvement contractor as well. Here are some tips to help you with the same.

Ask Around

Ask your friends and family members, especially those who opted for a home improvement project recently for trusted and reliable home improvement contractors they may know of. Check the local telephone directory for home improvement contractors in your area and check for reviews online to get in touch with the best one.

Get Bids

Call at least a number of home improvement contractors for bids. Make sure you give the complete details of the job and your requirements to every contractor that you speak to. This would make it easier for you to compare prices as well as services in order to choose the best deal.

Call References

Ask for some references from each contractor you approach. Call these references and ask for their feedback regarding the service of the contractor they had hired to do the job. In case you get a lot of complaints or are not able to get any references, skip the particular contractor altogether.

Check for Licensing

Check if the contractor you choose has a valid license and liability insurance. Also check whether his employees stand to benefit from workman’s compensation. Read the contract carefully and ask questions if you don’t understand certain terms or regulations. Ask for changes to be made to the contract if you feel so.

Check for Permits

If the work requires digging, check if the contractor you choose has the ability to obtain the required building permits from the authorities. Also make sure that the contractor has the necessary utilities to perform underground work.

Get Receipts for Payments

Once you have zeroed in on a specific home improvement contractor and signed the contract, deposit the fee by either cash or check. Make sure you ask for receipts for every single payment that you make to the contractor. Arrange for prompt payments that need to be made only on the basis of completion. For instance, a part of the payment needs to be done after 25% of the work is done and so on.

Hiring a home improvement contractor can be a tricky process. So make sure you the right contractor who would finish the job effectively and keep additional costs to a minimum in the process.
