The growing awareness and the need to go green have opened many eyes. Man have been polluting the environment for many years but the time have come now to do our part in minimizing the damage done to mother earth. Hurting the earth has its effects on humans. We can lessen this effects by creating greener earth, eco friendly and organic world. Going green will reduce global warming, resulting in a safer, healthier and earth friendly environment.

It is our duty now to do things which are environmental friendly in our day today lives. With growing need to preserve earth’s natural resources and decrease global warming, people have opt for a natural lifestyle by creating energy efficient homes and gardening organically. Here are 10 tips for a successful and effective green gardening:

1. Keep it natural

Naturally occuring materials like timber, stone and aggregate should be given preference to metals, plastics, bricks and cement during a building process where there is maximum pollution involved. We can copy from mother nature in tackling various problems like controlling pest by diversity, fertilizing soil naturally by compost, rain water to water plants etc. You just look around, answers will unfurl itself in front of your eyes. Being natural have never harmed anyone so far.

2. Vegetable waste as compost

Instead of throwing vegetable waste we can turn it to “gardener’s gold” by depositing in compost heap to be turned into plant loving nutrients. Compost improves soil fertility, aeration and water retention capability. Go organic for free and be healthy instead of wasting money buying chemical fertilizers and harm the environment.

3. Plant trees

Planting trees have always benefit life forms on earth. They protect us from summer heat and winter cold, saving a lot of energy consumption which is environment friendly and cuts power bills. Trees provide homes to many animals, birds and insects creating biodiversity habitat to control pest problems in our gardens. Birds like lady bird feeds on aphids and its larvae which are a nuisance in our precious gardens saving us a lot of money buying insecticides and pesticides which are toxic to humans. Plants in our lawns increases the beauty of our homes.

4. Raised garden beds

The number of health conscious people have increased considerably realizing the effects of various inorganic fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides. People tend to grow their own food instead of buying toxic laden fruits from market. Growing vegetables in raised beds have many benefits. You can control soil texture, fewer weeds and can be maintained easily. More plants can be grown in a small space. Raised beds can drain soil better than same level beds. Use compost to enrich soil and improve its quality and texture yielding healthy soil which gives healthy plants for healthy foods.

5. Harvest rainwater

There are various technique to harvest rain water. Adopt a convenient one to collect and store it. Rain water collects minerals and are free from chlorine, making it ideal for watering lawns, garden plants and other washing purposes. There will be great reduce in water cost and save a lot of water.

6. Careful watering

Watering should be done carefully during hot dry summer season so that water supply remains longer. Mulching and adding compost to soil will retain water as well as reduce evaporation due to summer heat. Install drip irrigation and soaker hoses instead of overhead water sprinklers to keep garden hydrated. Though drip irrigation pipes are plastic it saves a lot of water compare to sprinklers. Watering should be done early in morning or in the evenings as temperature drops down to avoid evaporation and wind. Water the roots of plants for effective growth.

7. Grow native plants

Grow native plants and vegetable as they adapt well to the climate and temperature. Such plants will adopt the natural water supply saving lots of extra water. These plants will grow comfortably decreasing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

8. Organic pest control

Create an environment encouraging biodiversity by planting varieties of plants together. Some plants attract predators which can feast on the pest. Introduce nematodes which attacks and kills pest like flea beetles and its larvae from soil.Different types of trees and shrubs attracts insects, birds, reptiles and amphibians which returns your generous nature by eating pest from your precious plants.

9. Use hand operated mowers

Mowers operated by electricity and gasoline emits harmful carbon dioxide and consume large amount of energy in the process. Hand operated mowers should be used to trim your lawns. You can work out during trimming your lawn and save time and uses your energy for your benefit. Solar powered auto motors can be used if you have large lawns as it is environment friendly.

10. Reduce lawns

The vast beautiful lawns need a lot of pesticides, herbicides and plenty of water in summer. Neither does it create diversity nor does it provide shade during hot summer months. The lawn mower is powered by oil and gasoline which emits carbon dioxide in environment producing global warming. Use hand operated ones or solar powered auto motors in preference to fuel ones.
