The researchers at Cambridge and Oxford Universities have observed the process on how viruses seize the genetic process of cells<\/strong>. They have claimed to identify the crucial key elements and their roles. The research is published in ‘Nature’. It may lead to new treatments for other infections including HIV. <\/p>\n

Genes provide cells with a code, which produces proteins to reproduce themselves. If virus attacks the cells, the cells misread the genetic code and start duplication of virus in stead of self replication. The process which the viruses take is known as ‘ribosomal frameshifting’. The researchers are now able to capture images of frameshifting in action with the use of electron microscopy.<\/p>

Dr Ian Brierley, one of the researcher said, <\/p>\n

it may be helpful to design new ways to combat viruses like HIV which set out this line of sabotage. The inhibition of frameshifting can block HIV replication and the improved image may contribute for antiviral strategies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
