Giving major relief to the patients, suffering from a rare type of blood disorder called, Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria <\/strong><\/a>(PNH), FDA has given its nodding to a new drug<\/strong> called, Soliris (eculizumab)<\/strong><\/a>. Interestingly, this is the first drug of its kind for the treatment of PNH.<\/p>\n

PNH is a rare kind of blood disorder<\/strong> that engulfs normally one person out of a million people. However, this kind of blood disorder could prove fatal, following anemia, fatigue, blood clots, strokes, etc.<\/p>

Here it is worth knowing that this newly approved drug by FDA doesn’t cure PNH directly but tries to overcome it by treating the breakdown of red blood cells, the most common characteristic of PNH. In order words, we can say that Soliris acts by blocking the complement system activity.<\/p>\n

FDA’s nodding to this drug will definitely help patients, suffering from PNH. However, only time will tell that how far. Throwing light on the importance of this drug, Steven Galson, M.D., M.P.H., director, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA remarked:<\/p>\n

This product is important in that it offers a treatment other than blood transfusion that may help this small population of patients who are often very ill.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
