Asthma may contribute to poor glycemic control in young people with diabetes, especially if it is left untreated, according to results from a study of nearly 2000 children and adolescents, age 20 years and younger, with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n

The study was published online September 26 in *Pediatrics*.<\/p>\n

The prevalence of asthma among all the youths with diabetes was 10.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], 9.6% – 12.3%). Among young people with type 1 diabetes, the prevalence was 10.0% (95% CI, 8.6% – 11.4%). In those with type 2, prevalence was considerably higher, at 16.1% (95% CI, 12.0% – 20.2%).<\/p>

Asthma, diabetes, and obesity are complex disorders that have become increasingly common among youth during the past decade, note lead author Mary Helen Black, PhD, from the Department of Research and Evaluation, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, Pasadena, and colleagues. “Although several epidemiologic studies have reported their co-occurrence, the relationship between these 3 conditions is not well understood,” they write.<\/p>\n
