Women who undergo abdominal sacrocolpopexy and abdominoplasty at the same time have a very high rate of perioperative complications and longer hospital stays, and should be encouraged to undergo these procedures separately, according to research presented here at the American Urogynecologic Society 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting.<\/p>\n

“A lot of these patients get combined procedures to save time, save expense, and only have one hospital admission, which is completely understandable,” lead author Kate V. Merriweather, MD, from Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, told *Medscape Medical News*. “At the very least, patients who want to have the procedures combined need to understand that there is this increased risk, so that they don’t expect it to be a quick or an easier approach to doing the surgeries.”<\/p>

Dr. Merriweather said she and her team noticed that patients who were undergoing abdominoplasty with sacrocolpopexy experienced myriad complications. Therefore, they decided to compare the outcomes with those seen with abdominal sacrocolpopexy alone.<\/p>\n
