The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has unveiled a cancer progress report that calls for sustained funding increases for biomedical research.<\/p>\n

This first cancer progress report ever from the AACR was issued amid fears that deficit hawks in Congress might see fit to further shave the budget for cancer and biomedical research. This year marks the first year in which the budget for cancer research has been reduced.<\/p>

\n<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n

AACR president Judy Garber, MD, MPH, director of the Center for Cancer Genetics and Prevention at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts, noted that every year, 1.5 million or more new cancer patients are diagnosed and more than 570,000 die from cancer.<\/p>\n
