Air pollution comes out to be a billion dollar question in New Zealand, killing around 1100 people annually, claims a four-year long study, headed by more than 20 leading science and health experts in New Zealand and Australia. <\/strong><\/p>\n

As per the findings of this study, approximately one in 20 people die due to air pollution, in New Zealand and Australia, while this equation stands at 1 in 16 for greater Auckland. What makes this finding more confounding is the fact that in smaller towns like Alexandra, Rotorua and Tokoroa too, pollution level has crossed warning level, raising serious health concerns. In the words of lead author, environmental science consultant Gavin Fisher:<\/p>\n

They’re uncomfortably high … They don’t meet the standards and they have little chance of being able to meet the standards.<\/p>

Concern raised by rising air pollution level is restricted to not only a few counties but to the entire globe, posing serious threat to human existence. According to WHO reports, air pollution leads to approximately 2 million premature deaths worldwide per year and strangely enough developing countries finds themselves at greater risk, when it comes to threats posed by air pollution. This is quite a serious issue because air pollutions results in severe health problems that include bronchitis, tightness in the chest, wheezing, lung cancer and cardiopulmonary disease even. Adding to this concern further, indoor air pollution also comes to fore, which according to WHO is responsible for around 2.7% of the global burden of disease.<\/p>\n

Therefore, hard measures are required to curb the menace posed by air pollution, which is playing havoc with thousands of lives every year – some in the form of outdoor while others in the form of indoor air pollution.<\/p>\n
