A former Prime Minister of India is said to have lived for a hundred years by drinking his own urine to keep himself healthy. Scientists at Cornell University and the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research in a recent study found that human urine contains hormone that can lower blood pressure by flushing sodium out of the body.<\/p>

The study published in a recent issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that unlike drugs that are currently used for lowering sodium levels and fight blood pressure, hormone in urine do not have the side effect of reducing potassium levels.

\nFrank Schroeder, assistant scientist of BTI and co-author of the study used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to analyze compounds in urine. The technique revealed three completely new compounds. Each of the new compounds were then synthesized and injected into rats. The rats’ urine was then monitored. Two of the compounds, both derivatives of a common metabolite xanthurenic-acid, raised sodium level in the rats’ urine but kept potassium level constant.<\/p>\n

The newly discovered hormones are similar to amino-acid derived neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin and are expected to play other roles in the body too. Further research is underway to find out what other role urine plays in keeping the body healthy.<\/p>\n
