Three brothers suffering from ALD, a rare brain disease

Three brothers are reported to suffer with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), an incurable brain disorder, in Leicester. The parent of five year, six year and eight year’s age kids detects this disease one month ago. The boys innate the disease through a recessive gene carrying by their mother all her life.

ALD targets the brain and central nervous system. One case in every 42,000 people is diagnosed with changeable degrees of the disease. Patients lose sight, hearing ability, talking ability and many of them die even before adulthood.

However, the boys are looking normal but their parents reported to see the signs of brain damage in one of kids now.

Dr Jayaprakash Gosalakkal, a paediatric neurologist at Leicester Royal Infirmary is treating the brothers. He said that,

there is experiment going on about the possibility of bone marrow transplants and stem cell treatment to treat the patients. The experimentation is yet in very early stages.
