Now, it seems to have earned another feather in its cap after a team from the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Science built the world’s fastest, state-of-the-art battery-driven electric car to run on ice. The team has christened the vehicle E-RA or Electric RaceAbout which can produce a massive 378 horsepower with an even more impressive 2,360 lb/ft of torque.

The Finns, as a race, have always been mesmerized by technology and this is just as well. Post World War II, they turned to technology for survival as agriculture alone wouldn’t have managed to sustain them. It’s no wonder, then, that the fastest EV on ice was built by this advanced race of people.

The Electric RaceAbout is a full-bodied sports car with exceptionally low energy consumption and very minimal emissions. The chassis has been made out of full carbon fiber monocoque, high strength steel sub frames and double wishbones with adjustable coil-overs for the suspension system. The batteries consist of lithium-titanate cells with a capacity of 32 kWh and a charging capability of 10 minutes at 250 kW. Direct 4WD is derived from each wheel which is installed with an electric motor.

When tested, the E-RA’s energy consumption is equal to fuel consumption at 2,35/100 km. With an acceleration time of under 6 seconds from 0-100km/h and an operational range of 200 kms, the Electric RaceAbout looks set to give conventional race cars stiff competition.

Instrumented tests for the E-RA took place on the frozen surface of Lake Ukonjarvi. Equipped with Nokian Hallapelitta ice tires, the company’s own test driver Janne Laitenen drove the EV to a top speed of 161.63 mph. E-RA’s average speed during the record breaking run reached approximately 156.67 mph or 252.09 kmph.

Via: Hybridcars

Finland is a country which has produced world class racers like Mika Hakkinen, Kimi Raikkonen and Keke Rosberg.
