Pininfarina\’s Cambiano concept may enter limited production

Pininfarina is renowned the world over for helping design top cars like those produced by Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Rolls-Royce and Maserati to name a few. Recently, it unveiled its own concept called the Cambiano at the Geneva Motor Show. There’s no word yet on how many will be mass produced though there are whispers that it’s being considered for a limited release.

Pininfarina Considering Cambiano Limited Production

The sleek ride is a plug-in hybrid coupe that churns out a tidy 680 hp or 500kW. It runs on four electric motors capable of delivering 60kW each with short peaking moments of 150kW. Though there are no definite specifications, the Italian coachbuilder expects the Cambiano to hit 200 km in full-electric mode while having a combined range of about 800 km. It should be able to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds.

If the Cambiano ever goes into production, expect to have its diesel turbine replaced with a diesel-driven internal combustion engine. If produced, Pininfarina’s concept will cater to the rich. According to the company, each car will be sold for a hefty $1.3 million if just 10 units are built. However, if 75 units can be produced, the Cambiano’s price will drop to almost half – about $525,000.

What fans of Pininfarina are hoping is that the Cambiano doesn’t suffer the same fate as the luxury hybrid Fisker Karma. The latter fell victim to a fire risk recall as well as poor consumer report tests. But Pininfarina isn’t known for its shoddy workmanship so we can be comforted by the fact that the Cambiano will probably fare much better than the Karma. It’ll probably take about two years for the car to go into production and we’re hopeful that Pininfarina will be able to take out all the bugs before it rolls out its sleek luxury hybrid coupe.
