Xenical drug ad triggers a row with consumer watchdog

The Therapeutic Goods Administration, a federal regulator is looking into claims that the weight-loss drug Xenical advertisement is directed towards young teenage girls. The consumer watchdog Choice has complained that the advertisement of the drug clearly violates the advertising guidelines set by TGA. The advertisement was aired during Australian Idol program whose audience is mainly constituted by 13 to 17 years old. Choice has further claimed that the advertisement has driven young teenage girls of average weight to ask pharmacist for the drug.

According to the claims, the ad is violating the set guidelines that prohibit drug advertisement directed at people under 18. On the other hand, the manufacturer of the drug Roche has argued the advertisement was aimed at older people and refuted the claim that it was aimed at adolescents.
