intel ad controversy

Intel has recently pulled this print advertisement when people raised furor over it for being offensive. The ad meant for promoting a new generation of micro-processors, featured six black sprinters bent down in the start position in front a white man wearing a shirt and chinos in an office set up. Intel was virtually forced to withdraw the advertisement and apologies for it, which was widely perceived as racist. Intel has stated that it had pulled the ad from hundreds of publications, but was unable to stop two, which had already shipped.

The tag line of the advertisement reads, ‘Multiply computer performance and maximise the power of your employees.’ The advertisement was fiercely criticized in the blogosphere for being insensitive, insulting and racist. However, the firm had also extended its sincere apology stating, ‘Unfortunately, our execution did not deliver our intended message and in fact proved to be insensitive and insulting. Upon recognizing this, we attempted to pull the ad from all publications but, unfortunately, we failed on one last media placement’.
