An exposed bit of tits or butts. Controversy. Subject is hot. Ad critics, the public and advertising blogs stumble upon the ad with over-excited hunger. Perhaps, advertising watchdogs like ASA may ban the ad. But, by that time, the ad will have grabbed a place in public minds, for good or bad.

That is why we often say the oldest mantra of advertising- sex sells.

But, you don’t know when will this insensibly unimaginative approach ruin your brand.

The latest ‘sex’ selling example is from Hunky Dory crisps campaign which features women in revealing tops playing rugby under straplines such as “Are you staring at my crisps?” and “Tackle these” .

The campaign has attracted a large number of complaints to the advertising watchdog and many think that these ads are demeaning to women. the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) said it had sent the company a solicitor’s letter demanding the campaign be pulled because of a reference to the crisps as a “proud sponsor of Irish rugby”.

Well, the most notable comment is from Susan McKay of the National Women’s Council who says it was really tiresome to see companies resorting to this kind of old style sexism when the world is full of so many imaginative possibilities.

That says it all.
