The advertisement was published in The Guardian, and attracted fierce criticism by people who considered it offensive. The advertisement is showing a close-up photograph of Tony Blair; on his upper lip there was a barcode placed. Text under the photograph reads, &#8216;id cards have worked well in Europe before. www.no2id.net&#8217;. The complaints made to the authority argued that the barcode on Tony Blair&#8217;s upper lip made him resemble Hitler and the portrayal of a public figure, as Hitler was offensive.<\/p><div class=\"cb7893cca652c40442fc9786b3b91706\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/drprem.com\/contact\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/drprem.com\/digital-marketing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2022\/11\/Dr-Prem-Digital-Healthcare-Web-Development.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Prem Web Design and Development\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>The advertisers contended that the photograph did not portray Tony Blair as Hitler but was intended to be a comparison of Tony Blair with Hitler based on policy, not personality. However, they admitted that the photograph of Tony Blair was skillfully retouched to make it appear like a 1930s portrait and the layout was designed to recall the Nazi era. They further clarified that the advertisement aimed at encouraging discussion among the general public, in particular the educated middle or media class, of the civil liberty implications of ID cards. They contended that it was designed to provoke thought and to appeal to the politically aware people.<\/p>\n<p>The ASA noted the ad had been intended to encourage discussion on a sensitive political issue. However, they ruled that the ad was unlikely to cause serious or widespread offense.
