In a shocking development, Yahoo<\/a> has reported a 61 percent drop in quarterly profit and closed the books on a tough year. The profit of the company fell to $269 million in the fourth quarter in comparison with $683 million in the corresponding period in 2005. However, Yahoo has reported 13 percent rise in revenue to $1.7 billion during the quarter. Taking a full year into account the company’s profit fell 60 percent to $751.4 million.<\/p>

This however, stamps the fact that the online giant Yahoo has lost ground to Google<\/a>, its cut-throat competitor for online advertising. Despite a fall in the profit its share rose by 5.8 percent following the news that a new web advertising system is now almost complete.<\/p>\n

Yahoo is heavily banking on the new advertising system called Panama and hopes for a financial comeback using this system. The new advertising system has been much delayed from its probable launch in 2006. The officials of the company say that Panama would start improve revenue from the second quarter this year.<\/p>\n
