The Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality in Asia (COSTA 2014)  @ Hiroshima, Japan
Oct 29 – Oct 31 all-day

The unprecedented boom in tourism these days is well documented, with over 1 billion international travelers in 2012, accounting for over 9% of the world GDP, and numbers expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2020.   Asia, too, has prospered from this trend with Bangkok claiming the coveted title of the most visited city in 2013.  These staggering numbers, coupled with the economic benefits associated with them, often overshadow the inherent conflict between the needs of conservation management and tourism.  The key to reconciling the differences resides in sustainable tourism, defined by the UN as “Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”  Viewed in the past as an ‘alternative’ or ‘fringe’ form of tourism, today it is widely accepted and plays an integral role in generating a green economy.

National Conference on Society, State, Law and We the People of India  @ Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India
Nov 12 – Nov 13 all-day

Society is a ‘web-relationship’. In the society political organization and politics are simply meant for the protection of citizen living in a specific geographia. State facilitates smooth and cozy life by minimizing struggle and conflict amongst the people by maintaining  law and order, it also protects people from the external aggression. It maintains cordial relation between countries for easy migration. But these ideal parlances are not always in practice because of many factors like growth of population, scarcity of resources, strife due to caste, religion, economy, inequality etc. Society always faces resonance to maintain ideal condition for living. In present times growth of population is more political rather than cultural. Politicians see people as their vote bank and all these create an adverse atmosphere for survival. Due to imbalance between resources and population survival of people becomes hard. It creates conflict of interests and anarchical situations in the society. The law is important for a society for it serves as a norm of conduct for citizens. It was also made to provide for proper guidelines and order upon the behaviour for all citizens and to sustain the equity in the society. The law is important because it keeps the society running. Without law there would be chaos and it would be survival of the fittest and everyman for himself. Not an ideal life style for most part. Emergence of law acts as safety valve for the smooth existence of society and its member,  law is important because it acts as a guideline as to what is accepted in society. Without it there would be conflicts between social groups and communities. Even after having strong armor of law we find various anomalies, conflicts and crime in the society, as law is not an absolute remedy for correcting the behavior of people. Law is an artificial device to regulate the society. Law plays an agent of modernization and social change. It is also an indicator of the nature of societal complexity and its attendant problems of integration. Multi facet culture and numerous cultural groups never promote a universal law to control human behavior.

2014 The Fifth International Conference on Translation and Cross-Culture  @ Taipei, Taiwan
Nov 15 all-day

Ours is an era of translation and cross-culture. Transportation and telecommunication technology have helped shorten the distance and increase contact between person and person, and between nation and nation. Spatial “movement” through travel, tourism, migration, diaspora, and communication facilitates the “interaction” between “Self” (individual/collective/national) and “Other/Other culture.” Such “movement” and “interaction” depend much on linguistic and cultural translation to keep on “motivation,” continuously negotiating, realizing, and vitalizing ideas so as to renew and open up multicultural space.
Translation Center and Center for Cross-Cultural Studies of National Chengchi University held the Fourth International Conference on “Boundary Crossing and Transformation” in November 2012, which triggered heated discussions among scholars from Taiwan or abroad. The conclusion of the conference led us to become fully aware of “boundary crossing and transformation” as a global phenomenon in face of the multiplicity in human cultures. With the impact of ever-changing information, various cultural/cross-cultural movements and interactions have become the main trend, which materialize objects and spiritual essence in various forms. Even the multi-directional movements in the instance of “migration from place to place in search of water and grass” might be transformed into new patterns.
