Upper Peninsula Michigan is a part of the U.S state of Michigan and is called as upper Michigan. It is bounded by Lake Superior on the northern side, St. Marys River on the east, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron form its borders on the southeast. The community of people living in the region of the Upper Peninsula is called Yoopers.

Sault Ste. Marie

To the north, side of the Upper Peninsula lies the town called Sault Ste. Marie, also known Soo in local language. The town consists of several collections of the animal trophy mounts and antlers. The 65 mile long St.Mary’s river connects Great Superior Lake and Huron, which is still the world’s largest waterway traffic system in the world. There is also a short bridge crossing over Canada and the annual 50-mile snowmobile endurance race is also held in here.

Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is a resort area extended up to 3.8 square miles and is located in Lake Huron between the Upper and Lower Peninsula. Fort Holmes is the highest point of the Island. The island is accessible through private boat, ferry, small aircraft, and during winters, you can reach it by snowmobile over an ice road.

The island is also important from the historical point of view. It was a sacred place for the inhabitants of Anishinaabe tribes who thought it is to the home of the Great Spirit. It is home to wide variety of terrain including coastline, boreal, bogs, marshes, limestone formation and forest. Various trekking activities can be done along with water sports.

Huron Mountains

Huron Mountains lie on the Upper Peninsula and consist of the highest mountain peak called as Mountain Avron, at an elevation of 1,979 foot. The main vegetation found is the boreal and includes one of the largest of growth forest unevenly distributed in the upper regions of the Great Lakes. Several wild animals are spotted such as moose, wolves, fisher, mink, red foxes and black bears.

Mackinac Bridge

Mackinac Bridge is a bridge that connects the Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula of the U.S State Michigan. It is the world’s sixteenth longest bridge in total suspension, and the longest in the western hemisphere. Designed by the engineer David B. Steinman, it was completed in 1957. The bridge has attracted several group of tourists interested in bird watching and photography. The bridge is famous for the bridge walk that is held once in a year during which the hikers can hike this section of the North Country National Scenic Trail.

Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum

Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is located in the Whitefish Point Station lying to the north side of the Chippewa County. Originally, it was light station property that was transformed into the museum. The museum includes artifacts representing shipwrecks along with the bell form the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. The whitefish also features a light tower and a signal building, which represents historic evidence. The tour of the museum also offers a trip to other four historic buildings. Many of the building included in the museum complex do not take admission fee.
