To comprehend why sexual problems arise, it is vital to know the sexual response cycle. This cycle has four stages, which have been listed below.

Desire i.e. excitement phase where the desire is a sexual “charge” that enhances the curiosity and responsiveness to sexual action. One senses “in the mood”. Heartbeat and breathing accelerates, and skin flushes red with additional flow of blood.

Arousal i.e. plateau phase where sexual stimulation takes place through touch, vision, hearing, taste, smell, or imagination. These cause physical changes. Fluids are secreted within the vagina, lubricating the vagina, labia, and vulva making intercourse extremely pleasurable. Then the vagina expands and clitoris enlarges along with hardening of nipples.

Pain during intercourse is very common among women. This prevents women from having pleasurable sex and creates a fear about sexual intercourse. This can happen due to various factors, such as hormonal changes, neurological problems, stress, pregnancy, menopause, stress, depression and sexually transmitted diseases. Consumption of alcohol and drugs also prevents women from having a good sexual life.
