How to deal with stressful situations at work

Dealing with stressful situations at work can be quite a difficult task. Whilst some people are naturally good at dealing with stress, there are others who are a total failure and work themselves up into a frenzy when faced with stress. Here are some fine steps to eliminate stress from the workplace and manage work efficiently.

Identify stressful situations

Identifying the stressful situations at work will help you regulate the work in an orderly manner and if needed reduce the work load as well. If certain situations like lack of team work, non cooperation from co workers, bad manager and other situations at the work place are causing the stress, you need to device ways by which these things can be corrected. Problems related to adjustment issues in the workplace can be very daunting for a person. In such cases, you must ensure that you take the matter to the human resources department or the concerned person so that they can help you deal with these issues effectively. You may also want to speak to your colleagues and mutually decide on certain rules and regulations that they can follow in order to reduce friction and stress at work.

Speak to your boss

If your work load is causing you sleepless nights and resultant stress, it is important that you speak to your boss about it. Overworked individuals normally end up with a variety of ailments that can be very debilitating and limiting to your lifestyle. Therefore, it is important to reduce the workload or move to another less stressful position even if the total package is a little less tempting than your current job. After all, without health, there is no use achieving anything in life. Your boss might reduce your work load or would want to refer you to the human resources department who will assess you potentials and transfer you to a less stressful work environment and position. Discuss with your management as to what options you have to reduce the stress in your work environment. If your company is not willing to reduce the work load, you must look for other openings and move out for the sake of your health.

Relaxation exercises

A lot of stressful situations can be dealt with adequately if you know certain simple techniques to remain calm and cool without stressing your body and mind. This simple technique is to remain relaxed all the time. A simple way to attain relaxation is to practice deep breathing exercises whenever you are faced with a stressful situation or all throughout the day when you have time. Deep breathing will ease your muscles and regulate your breathing, causing less tension and strain to your taut nerves. Meditation is another way of dealing with stress. Try to meditate for 10-15 minutes before you start your work. This will improve concentration, sharpness and efficiency and also keep you very relaxed all throughout the day. Meditation can be done whenever you are stressed out so that you can immediately regain your lost strength and energy and relax your body as well.

Exercise and sleep right

Most people who are in constant stressful situations benefit a lot from regular exercise. Exercise helps in improving blood circulation throughout the body. Exercise also helps in releasing feel good hormones like endorphins into the body, making you feel energetic and well balanced. Regular exercise will help in busting stress as the production of stress hormone cortisol will be considerably reduced in the body. Make it a point to exercise at least half an hour a day to keep your mind and body healthy, relaxed and safe from stress. You may take up any exercise regime like walking, swimming, jogging, aerobics, cycling etc. for the best results. Sleeping too is very important for busting stress. At least six hours, if uninterrupted sleep, can help you deal with everyday stress.

Speak to a therapist

If you cannot manage your stress alone, it is of utmost importance that you consult a therapist for managing your stress. Your therapist can suggest ways by which you can manage stress and prevent diseases like hypertension which can cause life threatening conditions as well. Therapists will guide you in finding methods for reducing stress in your work. It could be anything from exercises, meditation, yoga, deep breathing, diet etc. or a combination of a variety of factors that will help in achieving optimum results in the long run. Therapy sessions can be long winding and it might take some time for the results to show. But ensure that you are regularly following the advice of the therapist and soon things will fall into place and you will be able to relax and fare well in stressful situations at work.
