How to deal with runaways

deal with runaways

When kids reach teenage they often turn rebellious and one way of exhibiting this is to turn into a runaway. Before you label your kid as a goner, try to find out the reason behind his runaway behavior. Follow these simple tips to deal with runaways.

Understand the reason

Try to understand the reason why your child felt like running away from home. Sometimes the problem lies with the parents. Introspect and find out if your behavior towards your child or with your spouse is the reason for your child wanting to run away from you? Sometimes, a change in the family set up like separation of parents, divorce, death of a close family member, and so on can have an adverse affect on the child’s psychology and make him insecure. Also, peer pressure and problems at school such as bullying or failing at tests can be a reason.

Counseling

Once you know the actual reason for running away you need to have an honest and open conversation with your kid. Make him understand that running away from home is very risky and dangerous. Make him realize that even though running away might sound like a fun thing to do, it is not. Point to the problems he would face on running away such as finding food, money, and shelter to survive outside home. Assure him that you are there for him to sort out any problem he might be having at school or on the personal front.

Prevention

You need to be more careful to prevent your kid from running away in future as well. Show your child that you care about him and involve yourself completely in any problem that the child is facing. Spend some quality time with your kids so that he feels loved and cared for and would not ever think of running away from home.
