Maybe you can afford to wait. Maybe for you there’s a tomorrow.

Maybe for you there’s one thousand tomorrows, or three thousand, or ten, so much time you can bathe in it, roll around it, let it slide like coins through you fingers. So much time you can waste it.
But for some of us there’s only today. And the truth is, you never really know.

Man Watching Time

Have you ever thought about how it is going to be if you knew this was your last day of life? Chances are high that you would probably not be doing 90% of the things today which you are actually doing and go on to live the day completely in a different way. Why is that?

Isn’t it true that we usually waste away our days and wait for things to happen without actually doing anything. Think about it. What do we do in one whole day? How worthwhile is that day if you compare it to a lifetime? Why do we never live like there’s no tomorrow since we never really know whether we at all have the tomorrow to us or not. It is and would never be guaranteed. So why do we waste away time so thoughtlessly? The saying below summarizes it all:

“Maybe you can afford to wait. Maybe for you there’s a tomorrow. Maybe for you there’s one thousand tomorrows, or three thousand, or ten, so much time you can bathe in it, roll around it, let it slide like coins through you fingers. So much time you can waste it. But for some of us there’s only today. And the truth is, you never really know”

Thus, the crux of the matter is that – You never really know andhence you cannot afford to wait or to waste time like this.

Having thousand tomorrows:

The way we live and the basic approach to life for most of us is like as if we have thousands of tomorrows to wait for things to happen. Hence we have the luxury to waste time, throw away precious days of life without really doing anything worthwhile. But it never strikes our mind that we might not have those thousands of tomorrows. Infact, can we guarantee that we have one tomorrow also? The answer is no.

When one takes for granted that he/she has thousands of tomorrows to wait for, the approach to life changes in the following way:

  • You don’t live for the present but think about tomorrow
  • You do not give your best in work in one particular day and keep pushing things to do later
  • You prioritize things on the assumption that you have time
  • You don’t spend quality family time and keep that aside for future
  • You don’t thank people enough
  • You don’t love people enough
  • You forget to thank god / nature for this one precious day
  • You never give your best in anything
  • You don’t feel alive, feel the moment and give your best
  • You don’t do things to make a difference
  • You waste away time giving yourself the luxury of being in a bad mood, being depressed, brooding, etc
  • You wait for things to happen to you and never take the initiative to get things moving
  • You don’t enjoy life by living for present

So essentially when you have assumed in your mind that you have a lot of time, you waste away your today. Hence neither do you give your best to the world nor do you live your life to the fullest and enjoy every moment of it as you’re supposed to. Think about it. Tomorrows are never really guaranteed for any of us right? So why do we assume that so easily?

However, this does not mean that you start preparing for your death the next day. What is more essential is that you understand and realize this false assumption that we make in our minds, do away with it, and change your entire attitude of living life so that you can give your best today at the current moment in whatever you are doing, take time as the most precious gift of nature and never disrespect it by wasting it away.

Having Only Today:

One should live life as if there’s no tomorrow, should choose and do things and behave in a way which  reflects being alive this current moment, not once banking on the false assumption of a  guaranteed tomorrow. That is what is called living for the moment and it is the sole way in which one can feel alive and enjoy life. When you start living like this, you will feel a whole new difference in your life in terms of relationships, work, career, sense of fulfillment, inner happiness and peace. When you start living for the moment, what essentially happens is:

  • You give your best to work
  • You do not waste time in work related negative things such as politics, arguments, conflicts, revenge, etc
  • You become expert at time management and start doing more number of things in a given period of time
  • You never waste time in relationship related negative things like ego clashes, dominance, fights, etc
  • You start giving time to things which are actually important to you
  • You find time for the hobbies that you always wanted to learn or do
  • You make time to meet new people and do new things and only look at the positives in them
  • You search for positivity in everything since you want to draw out the joy in the current moment without feeling that you’re wasting time in being disappointed or irritated
  • You start feeling happy with little things of life
  • You start being satisfied and content with what you have and make the most of it without waiting for bigger and better things to come to you
  • You take stock of life at its happening for you and do not waste time by depending on a non-guaranteed future
  • You become happier yourself and keep others around you happy all the time
  • You start living for the moment, thereby learning to truly live the beautiful journey called life.
