How to protect your privacy

protect your privacy

There are certain online privacy rules which one needs to follow in order to protect one’s privacy. Whatever you do online you are leaving invisible tracks of your activities on the net. Despite being aware of the security resolutions many people are still slack in protecting their data, money and privacy. You can protect your personal information from being misused by others by following some online simple privacy rules.

Set stronger passwords

It is best to create unique passwords by using longer combinations of capital letters, numbers and lower case letters. Do not use the same password in multiple places and never store your passwords in the browser. It is so simple for hackers to get into your accounts via google so use long phrases instead of a single word for your passwords.

Log out of search engines

Most search engines require that you create an account to log in and access their services. Therefore, log out of your account after your web searches to protect your privacy. If you want more privacy you can get rid of the auto-complete feature in many search engines and browsers. This feature may be convenient but it suggests endings for whatever word you might be typing in and does nothing much for privacy.

Stay updated

Before you click on the update button, ensure that you recognize the program otherwise open the program and update from there itself. Make sure to keep everything updated from your web browser, Java, anti virus, operating system to Acrobat. You can also set programs to automatically update.

Sharing with care

Once you put something online it will remain there and impossible to remove it. Therefore, do not treat email like a picture postcard which is visible to all. Refrain from inserting random USB keys into your computer as you have no idea what they may contain or where they have been.

Check carefully

Be very wary of links in received emails as they can lead to the wrong places and if you have no idea who the mail is from then don’t open it. Be careful about opening any attachments unless you verify with the person who send it. You can take extra precaution by turning off the preview feature as it may contain malware which could harm your email.

There are many other tips which can be very useful when it comes to privacy settings. However, these are a few of the basics which can help you immensely.
