How Fear and Desire Affect the Psychology of Winning

Fear and Desire Affect the Psychology of Winning

Several motivational speakers give long speeches to motivate their audience. However, we cannot truly say that it is the real motivation that they try to pass on. These speakers actually talk inspirational stuff that is okay to give some inspiration or extrinsic motivation to an individual. However, the real motivation for an individual is something that comes from within. The intrinsic motivation can truly be termed as motivation. For example, if a coach talks to his/her sports team before a match, then we cannot say he/she is motivating players. It is actually some inspiration that he/she is trying to pass on.

real motivation for players comes from deep within them

The real motivation for players comes from deep within them. A coach’s talk only peps them up to dig deeper for that motivation. An individual’s personal motivation level drives him/her to achieve goals in life. It drives a person to action. Thus, a person’s performance or actions are the result of his/her own motivation and not solely due to extrinsic factors. Such an internal force has the power to drive a person toward a goal or even away from a goal. Some people keep working hard on their goals throughout life just because of their internal motivation. When someone takes positive steps to achieve his/her set goals, it is all driven by personal motivation.

Being a state of emotions, motivation is influenced by two major factors that are fear and desire. While their effects are strong, both drive motivation in contrasting ways. While desire is a positive motivational force, fear can be termed as a negative force. On several occasions, people perform to achieve their goals just because they have the fear of losing or people. They cannot simply afford to lose because of their fear, and thus, they are motivated by that fear to perform. However, such performers have higher chances of failure when the situations bring them under the stress or pressure of performance at a certain level. They simply crumble when they cannot achieve up to that level. Thus, it may become more frustrating rather than being motivating.

 fear is a negative motivator

This is the reason fear is called a negative motivator. It motivates but in a negative way. On the other hand, desire is something that creates a highly positive force inside a person. When a person has his/her own desire to achieve something or perform at a certain level, he/she automatically receives a positive energy or motivation to reach those goals. Thus, there is no fear behind his final performance at a task. A person with a desire performs positively and achieves more success as compared to a person who is driven by fear. Desire lets you celebrate your successes, as you always have good memories connected to them. Fear does the opposite in case you fail.

You will generally find that leaders or highly successful people are motivated by their inner force driven by desire to reach those heights. While they may not be highly talented, they still achieve their desires due to inner motivation. Their motivation keeps them focused and consistent. Had they been driven by the fear of failure, they would have been avoiding their defeats. While fear definitely motivates you, it also creates an anxiety within you that somewhat brings down your performance. Thus, you may surrender under pressure and there are more chances of losing than winning. If success is achieved through desire, it is long lasting and has stronger effects. Thus, one keeps on improving his/her performance level. Let desire motivate you better than fear.

Summary:

While both fear and desire motivate a person internally, both show contrasting effects. While fear-driven motivation may crumble under pressure, desire-driven motivation will always lead to success.
